Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

"Sierra?!" Cole’s voice exploded through Sierra’s phone speaker, frantic and breathless. "Thank God you called! Where are you?! Marcus Sterling and I are at a private office in Queens. We need to leave the state tonight! I managed to secure fifty thousand in cash from a safe deposit box!"
Sierra looked at me, taking a deep, shuddering breath to steady her tone, exactly as I had instructed her.
"Cole... I'm so scared," Sierra whimpered, putting on a masterful performance of panicked innocence. "The federal investigators came to my father's house an hour ago. They showed me the Zurich paperwork! Cole, my name is on those accounts! They said I'm looking at fifteen years for grand larceny!"
"Listen to me, Sierra! Stay calm!" Cole ordered loudly. "Don't tell them anything! We can fix this!"
"Fix it how?!" Sierra cried out. "Cole, you forged my signature on those offshore incorporation documents, didn't you?! You told me those were just investment consulting agreements! You used me to steal that four million from Lauren's trust!"
"Keep your voice down!" Cole snapped back, his arrogance slipping into fatal carelessness. "So what if I signed your name?! It was the only way to keep the funds hidden from Arthur Bennett’s forensic auditors! Lauren was getting suspicious, Sierra! She found out about us, she was asking questions about the dividend statements! I had to secure that cash before she tried to cut me off!"
"And what about what you did to her physical self, Cole?!" Sierra pressed, pressing her hand over her mouth to stay composed. "The bruises on her wrists... the tabloids are saying she made them up! If the police investigate—"
"She didn't make them up!" Cole snarled, his voice laced with venomous rage. "The stupid bitch tried to take my phone away two nights before Christmas when I was texting you! I had to grab her and pin her against the counter to teach her a lesson! She deserved it, Sierra! She was trying to ruin our plans!"
I sat across from Sierra, my face completely expressionless, though my heart pounded like a war drum in my chest. Beside me, the audio recorder’s digital meters flashed in bright red, capturing every single word of his confession in high-definition audio.
"Cole..." Sierra breathed out, tears now streaming down her cheeks for real. "How could you do that?"
"Forget about Lauren!" Cole yelled through the phone. "She's nothing! A pathetic, broken nobody who spent five years crying on my shoulder! Once Sterling finishes dragging her name through the mud with these postpartum stories, she’ll drop the custody suit just to make it stop! Now pack your bags and meet me at the private airfield in Teterboro in two hours. We have a flight to the Bahamas."
"Okay, Cole," Sierra whispered. "I'll be there."
"I love you, babe," Cole said, his voice softening slightly before he hung up. "We won."
The call disconnected.
Sierra sat trembling, staring at the phone. I reached across the table and stopped the recording, saving the file to three separate cloud servers with a single tap of my thumb.
"Did... did I get what you needed?" Sierra choked out, looking up at me with wide, terrified eyes.
"You saved yourself a prison sentence, Sierra," I said, standing up and sliding the recorder into my suit pocket. "My legal team will contact the US Attorney’s office. You will receive full immunity in exchange for turning this recording over as state’s evidence."
"What about Cole?" she asked softly.
I looked down at her, my eyes cold and unforgiving. "Cole is about to find out what happens when you mistake a woman's patience for weakness."
Thirty minutes later, I walked into the Manhattan District Attorney's Command Center. My father, Julian Harris, and United States Attorney Robert Vance (no relation to Sierra) were waiting in the conference room surrounded by federal marshals and NYPD detectives.
I placed the digital recorder on the center table.
"Gentlemen," I said, looking at the lead prosecutor. "You have his full confession to felony wire fraud, grand larceny, corporate forgery, and aggravated domestic assault. He is currently heading to Teterboro Airport to flee the country on a private charter."
US Attorney Vance listened to the first two minutes of the tape, a grim, satisfied smile spreading across his face. He turned to the Chief of the Federal Marshal Service.
"Issue the emergency warrant," Vance commanded. "Intercept Cole Whitmore at Teterboro Airport. Use whatever force is necessary."
As the federal marshals rushed out of the room to execute the warrant, my father walked over to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.

"You did it, Lauren," he whispered proudly. "You took his own trap and sprung it on him."
I looked out the high-rise window at the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline below. The snow was still falling softly over the city, just as it had on Christmas Eve. But the terrified, helpless woman who had wept in that nursery three nights ago was gone forever. In her place stood a survivor who was finally taking back her life, her name, and her children's future.
