Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Corner

Cornered animals are the most dangerous, and Cole Whitmore was no exception.

Stripped of his corporate accounts, kicked out of his managing partnership, and facing imminent arrest, Cole retreated to the only resource he had left: his personal defense attorney, Marcus Sterling, a legal mercenary known for using ruthless, unethical tactics to destroy victims in high-profile divorces.

On December 27th, three days after my escape, Sterling launched a vicious media blitz.

They leaked fabricated stories to Manhattan gossip tabloids, alleging that I had suffered a severe, secret battle with postpartum depression and substance abuse. They claimed I had staged the abuse marks on my wrists, kidnapped our children in a manic episode, and used my father’s judicial influence to execute an illegal corporate takeover of Whitmore Capital.

A sleazy tabloid published a front-page headline: BENNETT FAMILY TYRANNY: DID FEDERAL JUDGE HELP HEIRESS KIDNAP INFANTS FROM DEVASTATED FATHER?

When I saw the article online, my blood ran cold. The article included distorted photos of me looking exhausted leaving a pediatrician’s office weeks ago, framed as proof of my "unstable mental state."

"This is classic Sterling tactics," Julian Harris explained during an emergency strategy session in our Greenwich war room. "They can't win on the financial or criminal facts, so they're attempting to destroy your public credibility to force a settlement before the criminal indictment is unsealed."

"They're dragging my children into the gutter," I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. "They're trying to make it seem like I'm an unfit mother."

"Let them play their dirty tricks," Judge Bennett said, his brow furrowed in concentration. "We don't fight this in tabloids, Lauren. We fight this in court with unassailable truth."

"No, Dad," I interrupted, standing up from the conference table. Everyone in the room looked at me in surprise. "Sterling wants a public fight? I'll give him one. But we aren't going to play defense anymore."

"What do you have in mind, Lauren?" Julian asked, leaning forward, intrigued.

"Cole thinks Sierra Vance was his partner," I said, a dangerous plan forming in my mind. "He thinks she’s standing by him. But women like Sierra Vance don't stay with men who lose their money. Sierra isn't loyal to Cole; she's loyal to her father's fortune. And right now, Apex Global is terrified of being dragged down by Cole’s public trainwreck."

I turned to Julian. "Set up a private meeting between me and Sierra Vance."

Julian raised an eyebrow. "Sierra? She’s a co-conspirator, Lauren. Why would she meet with you?"

"Because," I said, a cold smile crossing my face, "I hold the original digital keys to the Zurich account. Cole put the shell account in both his name and Sierra’s name to evade domestic tax thresholds. If Cole goes down for grand larceny and wire fraud, Sierra goes down right beside him as an active accomplice. She needs a way out, and I'm the only person who can give it to her."

Two hours later, Julian’s team conveyed the message. Predictably, Sierra Vance—terrified of federal prison—agreed to meet me in a private room at a neutral, high-security private club in Midtown Manhattan that evening.

At 7:00 PM, I walked into the dimly lit, oak-paneled room. I wore a tailored black suit, my hair pulled back in a sharp, elegant bun, looking every bit the Bennett heir I was born to be.

Sierra was already waiting, pacing nervously near the window. She looked completely different from the polished blonde in the hotel photo. Her eyes were red, her designer clothes looked hastily put together, and her hands shook as she clutched an untouched glass of wine.

"Lauren," Sierra swallowed hard, stepping back as I entered. "If you brought federal agents with you—"

"Sit down, Sierra," I commanded quietly, taking a seat at the head of the table.

She hesitated, then collapsed into a chair across from me. "Look, whatever Cole told you, I didn't know he was hurting you! He told me you were roommates! He said you stayed together just for the kids and that you had an open agreement!"

I looked at her with pure, unadulterated contempt. "Save the performance, Sierra. You didn't care about my marriage, and you certainly didn't care about my sick babies when you let Cole send me a photo from your hotel bed on Christmas Eve."

Sierra flushed bright red, looking down at the table. "What do you want, Lauren? My father’s lawyers said I shouldn't talk to you."

"Your father’s lawyers are trying to save your father, not you," I laid it out bluntly. "Cole set you up, Sierra. The Zurich account that holds four million dollars in stolen trust funds? He signed your name as the primary managing director of the underlying holding company. When the SEC unseals the indictment tomorrow, Cole is going to pin the entire offshore embezzlement scheme on you, claiming you manipulated him."

Sierra’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "What?! No! He promised me we were moving to Switzerland! He said the account was our clean start!"

"Cole doesn't love anyone but himself, Sierra," I said, pulling an audio recorder from my blazer pocket and placing it on the table between us. "You were just his exit strategy. But I am giving you one chance—and one chance only—to save yourself from serving ten years in a federal penitentiary."

Sierra looked at the recorder, then at me, her chest heaving with rapid breaths. "What do I have to do?"

"You're going to call Cole right now on speaker," I said, tapping the recorder. "You're going to tell him you're terrified, that the SEC is questioning you, and you're going to get him to explicitly admit on tape that he forged your signature on those offshore accounts, that he stole the funds from the Bennett Trust, and that he physically assaulted me to keep me quiet."

Sierra stared at me, realization dawning on her face. "You want me to wear a wire for you."

"I don't want you to do anything, Sierra," I leaned in, my voice dropping to a icy whisper. "You can either help me put Cole Whitmore in prison forever, or you can go down with him. You have ten seconds to choose."

Sierra looked at the sleek black recorder, then down at her trembling hands. The glamorous mistress had finally realized she was nothing more than a pawn in a game she was never equipped to play.

Slowly, she reached into her bag, pulled out her phone, and tapped Cole’s number.

I hit RECORD.
