Chapter 2: Ghosts of the Past

Elena sat motionless in the dim ICU room, the only sound the steady beep of monitors keeping her daughter anchored to life. Brooke’s bruised face looked almost peaceful in sleep, but the purple shadows around her eyes and the bandages wrapping her head told the brutal truth. Five months pregnant. Beaten with a golf club. Left to die at a bus stop over polished silver.

The rage that had nearly led Elena to burn the Vance mansion to the ground still simmered beneath her skin like banked coals.

A soft knock pulled her from her thoughts. Dr. Mitchell entered quietly, his face etched with exhaustion but cautious optimism. “Her latest scans look better than expected. The brain swelling continues to decrease. The baby’s heartbeat is strong for now. We’re monitoring closely, but… she’s a fighter, Elena. Just like her mother.”

Elena nodded, unable to speak for a moment. When she finally did, her voice was low and steady. “I need to know everything. The injuries. The risks. Don’t sugarcoat it.”

Dr. Mitchell sat down. He explained the skull fracture, the ruptured spleen, the internal bleeding they had barely controlled. The pregnancy added layers of complexity—stress on Brooke’s body could trigger premature labor or worse.

“She’s stable for now,” he finished. “But the next forty-eight hours are critical.”

After he left, Elena stepped into the hallway and made the call she had been avoiding for years.

The voice that answered was gravelly, familiar, and dangerous. “Elena Voss. It’s been a long time.”

“Marcus,” she said quietly. “I need you.”

There was a pause. “What happened?”

She told him everything. The attack. The golf club. The silverware excuse. The way they left her pregnant daughter bleeding in the rain.

Marcus’s response was cold. “The Vance family. Old money. Connected. Trevor’s father built their empire on shady deals. Victoria runs the social side like a queen. Give me twenty-four hours. I’ll start digging up ghosts.”

Elena returned to Brooke’s bedside. As dawn broke, her daughter stirred.

“Mom…” Brooke’s voice was raspy. “The baby?”

“Still fighting,” Elena whispered, squeezing her hand. “Just like you.”

Tears slipped down Brooke’s swollen cheeks. “They said I was useless. That the baby would ruin Trevor’s image. Victoria held me down… Trevor swung the club like I was nothing.”

Elena’s jaw tightened. “They will pay for this. I promise you.”

By midday, the first reports trickled in from Marcus’s network. Trevor Vance had a history of “incidents” with previous girlfriends—assault charges quietly settled with money. Victoria Vance had covered up scandals for decades, using influence and threats. The family’s business empire had skeletons: environmental violations, worker exploitation, and suspicious financial transfers.

Elena met Marcus in the hospital parking garage later that afternoon. He was older now, but the same sharp-eyed man who had once worked beside her in a very different life. A life of quiet power and necessary shadows.

“I’ve got people watching the Vance estate,” Marcus said, handing her a thick folder. “Trevor’s already lawyered up. They’re claiming Brooke attacked them first. Victoria’s spinning it as a ‘domestic dispute.’”

Elena flipped through the pages. Photos. Bank records. Old police reports. “I was supposed to be done with this life,” she murmured.

Marcus shrugged. “Some ghosts don’t stay buried. Especially when family is involved.”

That evening, Trevor Vance dared to show up at the hospital with his lawyer, demanding access to Brooke. Elena met them in the waiting room, her presence alone shifting the atmosphere.

“You have no right to be here,” Elena said coldly.

Trevor, tall and handsome in an expensive coat, sneered. “She’s my wife. Carrying my child. This is a private family matter.”

Elena stepped closer. “You left her bleeding at a bus stop. You nearly killed my daughter and grandchild. Touch her again, and I will destroy everything you love.”

The lawyer tried to intervene, but Trevor’s face paled slightly. He wasn’t used to being threatened.

Security escorted them out. But Elena knew this was only the beginning.

Over the next days, Brooke slowly improved. She could speak more clearly. The baby’s heartbeat remained steady. But the trauma ran deep. Nightmares plagued her sleep. She woke screaming Trevor’s name more than once.

Elena stayed by her side constantly, sleeping in the uncomfortable chair. Olivia—Brooke’s best friend from college—arrived to help, offering additional support.

Meanwhile, Marcus’s investigation uncovered more. Victoria Vance had a secret account used to silence victims. Trevor had been gambling with company funds. Their perfect public image was a fragile lie.

Elena made strategic moves. She leaked just enough information to trusted journalists. The first article appeared online by the end of the week: “Vance Heir Accused of Brutal Assault on Pregnant Wife.”

The mansion that had nearly burned became a fortress as the family scrambled. Victoria issued a statement calling the allegations “baseless.” Trevor hid behind lawyers.

But the pressure was building.

One night, as Brooke slept, Elena stepped outside for air. James, an old contact from her past life who had become something more years ago, appeared in the shadows.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” he said quietly.

Elena looked at him—the man who had once understood her darkness. “I have to protect my daughter.”

Together, they began planning the next phase.

The ghosts of Elena’s past were rising. And the Vance family had no idea what kind of storm was coming for them.
