Chapter 1: The Match in the Rain

The match burned dangerously close to Elena’s fingertips, its tiny flame flickering defiantly against the pouring rain. Gasoline fumes rose thickly around the Vance family mansion, soaking into the expensive welcome mat and wooden porch columns. One drop. One second. That was all it would take to turn their perfect, powerful world into an inferno.
Her phone buzzed again in her other hand.
Dr. Mitchell’s voice cut through the storm: “Elena… she’s asking for you.”
The match trembled. Elena stared at the oak doors of the mansion where her daughter had been beaten nearly to death. Inside, Trevor Vance and his mother Victoria were likely sleeping peacefully, untouched by consequence. They had left Brooke bleeding at a bus stop like discarded trash—all because of imperfectly polished silverware.
But Brooke was awake.
Elena dropped the match into a puddle. It hissed and died.
“I’m coming,” she whispered into the phone, already running back to her truck through the mud.
The drive back to St. Jude’s Hospital was a blur of rain and rage. Elena’s hands gripped the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. She had once been someone the powerful feared. A woman with connections in shadows most people never saw. Marriage and motherhood had softened her, but the old instincts were roaring back to life.
At the hospital, Dr. Mitchell met her in the ICU waiting room. “It’s a miracle, Elena. Her vitals stabilized suddenly. The brain swelling decreased. She’s conscious, though disoriented and in pain. The pregnancy… it’s still critical, but the baby’s heartbeat is steady for now.”
Elena rushed into the room. Brooke lay propped up slightly, her face a map of bruises, one eye swollen shut. Tubes and machines surrounded her, but those beautiful hazel eyes—Elena’s eyes—focused on her mother.
“Mom…” Brooke’s voice was a broken whisper. “They… they said the baby was a mistake.”
Elena sat beside the bed and took her daughter’s hand gently. “I know, sweetheart. I’m here. They will never touch you again.”
Brooke cried silently, her body too weak for more. Elena stayed through the night, holding her hand, making silent promises.
By morning, the Vance family’s lawyers had already contacted the hospital, attempting to control the narrative. Trevor claimed Brooke had “fallen” and was mentally unstable. Victoria sent flowers with a card that read “Get well soon, darling.”
Elena’s blood boiled.
She stepped into the hospital corridor and made a call she hadn’t made in over twenty years.
“It's Elena,” she said when the line picked up. “I need your help.”
The voice on the other end was calm and dangerous. “What do you need?”
“Everything on the Vance family. And I want them to suffer.”

The game had changed. Brooke was alive. The baby was fighting. And Elena was no longer just a grieving mother.
She was the woman they should have never provoked.
