Chapter 5 - The Snake's Venom

The next morning, the media coverage was a total bloodbath for the Whitmore name.

Arthur sat in the cabin’s kitchen, a cup of black coffee in hand, watching the television screen.

"...in a shocking turn of events, federal prosecutors have unsealed a sweeping forty-two count indictment against Whitmore Enterprises," the news anchor reported, her voice grave. "...additionally, shocking video footage has leaked online showing real estate heir Richard Whitmore brutally assaulting his wife, Lily Miller. The public outrage has been immediate, with protestors gathering outside the county courthouse demanding no bail for the prominent billionaire."

Lily walked into the kitchen, wearing one of Arthur's oversized flannel shirts. The swelling on her face had gone down slightly, but the emotional exhaustion was evident in her slow gait. She sat opposite him, looking at the television screen.

Seeing Richard's mugshot on the screen—his hair disheveled, his famous arrogant smirk replaced by a look of sheer terror—brought a strange, complicated wave of emotion over her.

"He looks so small now," Lily said quietly. "Without his money, without his mother... he’s just a pathetic coward."

"He always was, Lily," Arthur said, passing her a plate of toast. "People like him build high walls because they know how fragile they are underneath. The moment the walls come down, they crumble."

Suddenly, the satellite phone on the table rang. The caller ID was restricted.

Arthur answered, putting it on speaker. "Speak."

"Arthur," a voice hissed. It wasn't the cold operator from the Vanguard. It was Margaret Whitmore. Her voice was raspy, stripped of its usual aristocratic elegance, filled with a desperate, venomous rage. "You think you've won, don't you? You think because you stole our money and put my boy in a cell, you can walk away?"

Arthur's expression didn't change. "You shouldn't be on a phone, Margaret. Your lawyers should be telling you to prepare for a very long prison sentence."

Margaret laughed, a sound that bordered on insanity. "Prison? For a Whitmore? You fool. My legal team just discovered a technical loophole in the wiretapping evidence you provided to the feds. The judge we have on our payroll—Judge Thomas—just signed an order suppressing the financial records. And as for Richard's little domestic dispute... accidents happen. A good lawyer will have him out on a signature bond by noon."

Lily’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked at Arthur, terror flooding back into her eyes. "Dad... no... they can't get out."

"Listen to me, you miserable old man," Margaret continued, her voice dropping into a menacing whisper. "We know about the cabin. Vance talked before the feds took him. I have another asset on the way to you right now. A real professional. Not a mercenary—an assassin. By the time the sun sets, you will be dead, and Lily will be back in our house, learning what happens to girls who betray their husbands. Enjoy your last hours, Arthur."

The line clicked dead.

Lily stood up, knocking her chair over. "Dad! We have to go! We have to run right now! They know where we are!"

Arthur remained seated. He took a slow sip of his coffee, his calm demeanor acting as an anchor in the storm of her panic.

"We aren't running, Lily," Arthur said softly.

"But she said an assassin is coming!" Lily cried, tears streaming down her face. "You can't fight everyone, Dad! Please, let's just leave the country! Use your old connections to get us fake passports!"

Arthur stood up and walked over to her, placing his hands firmly on her shoulders. "Lily, if we run, we spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders. Every shadow becomes Richard. Every stranger becomes a threat. That is no way to live. I promised you a normal life, and to give you that, I have to eradicate the threat entirely."

He walked over to the ledger he had taken from the bank vault the night before.

"Margaret thinks Judge Thomas is going to save them," Arthur said, a cold, predatory smile appearing on his face. "She doesn't know I have the ledger. I have the physical proof of every bribe Thomas ever took from her. I have the bank routing numbers. I have the dates."

He picked up the satellite phone and dialed a different number.

"Connect me to the Governor," Arthur commanded when the line picked up. "Tell him Vanguard is on the line. And tell him it’s regarding the immediate impeachment of a federal judge."

He looked out the window at the dense forest surrounding the cabin. The rain had stopped, but the fog was thick, rolling through the trees like a shroud.

"Let the assassin come," Arthur whispered to himself. "The woods are my home. And I am the apex predator here."
