Chapter 2 - The Digital Guillotine

Back at the Whitmore estate, the atmosphere had shifted from celebratory to tense, though Richard Whitmore still held his glass of Scotch with an air of supreme arrogance.

"Don't worry about it, Mother," Richard said, brushing a speck of dust off his linen jacket as he stood in the grand foyer. "Higgins said his boys are already on them. Arthur Miller is a nobody. A retired warehouse manager. He’ll be in a cell by sunset, and Lily will be back here where she belongs, begging for forgiveness."

Margaret Whitmore sipped her mimosa, her face twisted in disgust. "The nerve of that man. Walking into my home, ruinous behavior in front of the Senator and the Mayor. We will make an example of him, Richard. I want his house foreclosed. I want his reputation destroyed."

Chief Higgins walked in from the patio, wiping barbecue sauce from his chin, his brow furrowed as he looked at his ringing cell phone. "Hey, Richard, Margaret... something weird is going on. My dispatch isn't answering. I’ve been trying to call Miller and Vance, the unit I sent after the truck, but their radios are dead."

"Probably just the storm coming in, Chief," Richard dismissed with a chuckle. "Relax. Have another drink."

Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered.

Not a simple brownout. The crystal chandeliers overhead began to hum loudly. The television screens in the media room erupted into bright static, followed by a violent pop as the bulbs shattered.

Then, the panic started.

From the living room, a high-society guest shrieked. "Look at the stock ticker! Richard, look at your phone!"

Richard frowned, pulling his custom titanium smartphone from his pocket. The screen was flashing red. A single notification was plastered across the interface, impossible to swipe away: ACCOUNTS COMPROMISED. ASSETS FROZEN BY ORDER OF FEDERAL TREASURY.

"What is this? A prank?" Richard muttered, tapping the screen aggressively.

It wasn't a prank.

Within sixty seconds, every single electronic device in the Whitmore mansion became a window into their destruction. The corporate servers of Whitmore Enterprises—the multi-billion-dollar real estate conglomerate that owned half the state—were being hollowed out.

Deep in a secure cyber-warfare bunker three hundred miles away, a team of elite digital operatives under Arthur’s old command were executing the "Code Black" protocol. They weren't just hacking the Whitmores; they were erasing them.

"Sir," an operative reported over an encrypted channel to Arthur, who was now carrying Lily into the safehouse cabin. "We’ve breached their offshore accounts in the Caymans. Three hundred and fifty million dollars moved to a federal holding escrow under suspicious activity clauses. We’ve released the unredacted tax audits from the last twelve years to the IRS, SEC, and the Department of Justice."

"And the local infrastructure?" Arthur asked, setting Lily down on a plush sofa and wrapping her in a warm blanket.

"We’ve bypassed the Oakridge Police Department's firewalls. We have full control of their servers. Every email, every text message, every recorded bribe between Chief Higgins, Margaret Whitmore, and the local judiciary has just been uploaded to the FBI’s public press portal. It's a feeding frenzy, Vanguard. By tomorrow morning, the news anchors won't be talking about the Easter egg hunt."

In the mansion, Richard’s phone began to ring continuously. It was his chief financial officer. When Richard answered, the man's voice was hysterical.

"Richard! It's gone! Everything is gone! The bank just called—our lines of credit have been revoked. The trading floor has suspended our stock. And Richard... the FBI... they’re at the corporate headquarters right now with federal warrants! They say we’ve been laundering money for a cartel out of the real estate developments!"

Richard’s face drained of color. The Scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the pristine white rug, right over the spot where Lily's blood had pooled an hour earlier.

"No," Richard whispered, his voice trembling. "That's impossible. We’re protected. Mother, who is doing this?!"

Margaret was staring at her own tablet, her hands shaking so violently she dropped the device. On the screen was a leaked document from fifteen years ago—a document detailing how she had paid off a coroner to cover up the suspicious death of a young maid at their estate. A crime she thought was buried forever.

Above the document, a single line of text was typed in bold, black letters:

THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH. ARTHUR MILLER SENDS HIS REGARDS.

"It's him," Margaret gasped, her chest heaving as she gripped her pearls. "The father. The old man. Richard... who is he?"

Before Richard could answer, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion were kicked open with explosive force.

A tactical squad of FBI agents, clad in full body armor and carrying automatic rifles, poured into the foyer.

"Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!"

Chief Higgins tried to step forward, flashing his badge. "Look, boys, I'm the Chief of Police here—"

An FBI agent didn't even let him finish. He slammed Higgins against the wall, wrenching his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "Jonathan Higgins, you are under arrest for federal conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and taking bribes. Shut your mouth."

Richard backed away, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He looked out the window. The beautiful pastel tents were being knocked down by the rising wind. The wealthy guests were running for their cars in a panic.

An FBI special agent stepped directly up to Richard, drawing a warrant from his vest. "Richard Whitmore Jr.? You are under arrest for bank fraud, racketeering, and felony domestic assault."

"Assault?!" Richard screamed, his arrogance momentarily returning. "You have no proof! My wife fell! She's a clumsy drunk!"

The agent smiled coldly, holding up a smartphone. On the screen was the live video recording from Lily's phone—the phone Arthur had noticed under the couch. It had captured everything: the argument, the slap, the heavy thud, and Richard's smug confession to Arthur.

"We have the cloud backup, Mr. Whitmore," the agent said. "And your father-in-law made sure the Attorney General watched it personally. Turn around."

As the steel cuffs bit into Richard's wrists, he realized, with a creeping sense of horror, that the nightmare hadn't even begun. Arthur Miller hadn't just come to take his daughter back. He had come to execute an empire.
