Chapter 4 - THE FALLOUT AT SHAKER HEIGHTS

By 2:00 PM, news of the impending financial execution of Sterling Holdings had hit the high-stakes real estate circles of Cuyahoga County like a nuclear strike.

At the Shaker Heights mansion, Chloe stood in the grand foyer, holding her nine-month-old son, Noah, against her shoulder.

Two flatbed tow trucks had pulled into the circular driveway. Three men in uniform were loading Brandon’s midnight-blue Porsche 911 Turbo and Richard’s luxury Mercedes sedan onto the back of the trucks.

Brandon was standing on the lawn in his socks, screaming at the tow truck drivers while waving his arms frantically.

"You can't do this! This is private property! I'm calling the police!" Brandon shrieked, his voice shrill and desperate.

"Call them, Mr. Sterling," the head tow operator replied nonchalantly, holding up a repossession court order signed by a Common Pleas judge two hours ago. "Court-ordered asset seizure under the Apex Capital debt default filing. Take it up with your father's lawyers."

Chloe watched from the front door, her heart hammering in her chest. She still didn't fully understand what was happening. Her phone rang in her hand. The caller ID showed Dad.

With trembling fingers, Chloe answered. "Dad...? What's happening outside? There are tow trucks seizing Brandon's cars..."

"Chloe, sweetheart," Arthur’s voice came through the line, warm, gentle, and utterly calm—the voice of her loving father. "I have sent a private town car to your house. It should be arriving at the front gate right now."

Chloe looked down the driveway. A sleek black Lincoln Navigator was pulling up behind the tow trucks.

"I want you to take Noah, pack three bags of your personal clothes and baby supplies, and get into the car," Arthur instructed gently. "You are coming home to the bungalow."

"Dad, I don't understand..." Chloe stammered, tears filling her eyes. "Brandon is losing his mind. His father called him an hour ago screaming that they're ruined. What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Chloe," Arthur replied softly. "I simply pulled back the curtain so you could see who you actually married. Please get into the car, daughter. It’s time to come home."

Chloe hung up the phone. She looked out at Brandon, who was currently lying on the grass, throwing a pathetic temper tantrum as his sports car was hauled up onto the flatbed.

He turned his head, seeing Chloe standing in the doorway with her suitcase.

Brandon scrambled to his feet, running over to her, his clothes covered in grass stains, his face twisted in panic.

"Chloe! Chloe, baby!" Brandon grabbed her arms, his hands shaking. "You have to call your dad! You have to tell him to stop this!"

Chloe looked into Brandon’s eyes. For two years, she had seen him as a strong, powerful, protective husband. Now, looking at him, she saw only a pathetic, self-centered coward who was terrified of losing his toys.

"Why should I call him, Brandon?" Chloe asked quietly.

"Because he’s destroying my family!" Brandon yelled, tears of rage springing to his eyes. "He lied to us! He made us think he was a cafeteria worker! He set me up!"

"He didn't set you up, Brandon," Chloe said, her voice growing steady and strong. "He gave you a gift. A blanket made from my mother’s wedding dress. And you threw it in the trash because you thought he was poor."

"I was stressed! I made a mistake!" Brandon cried out, reaching for Noah. "Look at our son! You can't let your father ruin our son's future!"

Chloe pulled baby Noah back, stepping out of Brandon’s reach.

"My father didn't ruin Noah's future, Brandon," Chloe said firmly, stepping past him toward the waiting black car. "You did."

"Chloe! If you leave this house, don't you dare come back!" Brandon screamed behind her. "You hear me?! You're nothing without my family's money!"

Chloe didn't turn around. She got into the rear seat of the Navigator, closed the heavy door, and watched through the tinted glass as the gates of the Sterling mansion closed behind her forever.
