Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF INSULT

While Arthur sat in the high-altitude power sanctuary of downtown Cleveland, three miles away in the affluent suburb of Shaker Heights, Brandon Sterling was sitting in his sunlit breakfast nook, sipping an artisanal espresso.
The Sterling mansion was a sprawling Tudor-style estate featuring manicured hedges, a heated infinity pool, and a four-car garage housing two Italian sports cars.
Chloe Harmon-Sterling sat across from him at the marble kitchen island. Her eyes were red and swollen from a night of silent tears. She was wearing a simple cotton robe, her fingers nervously picking at the edge of her placemat.
"Brandon," Chloe began, her voice barely above a whisper. "You shouldn't have said those things to my father yesterday. He spent months working on that blanket. My mother—"
"Oh, spare me the sob story, Chloe," Brandon interrupted without looking up from his iPad, where he was monitoring the morning stock futures. He was thirty-two, handsome in a sharp, arrogant way, with gelled hair, a custom-fitted golf polo, and an air of absolute entitlement. "Your dad is a sweet old guy, okay? But he’s a cafeteria worker. He makes twelve dollars an hour slopping mashed potatoes for high school kids. He doesn't understand our lifestyle."
"It was my mother's wedding dress, Brandon!" Chloe’s voice cracked, a rare flare of anger piercing through her submission. "It wasn't about money!"
Brandon set his espresso cup down with a sharp clack. He turned his head and glared at his wife, his blue eyes cold and condescending.
"Listen to me very carefully, Chloe," Brandon said, his voice dropping into a stern, manipulative tone. "My mother hosted thirty of the most influential women in Ohio real estate in that garden yesterday. The Mayor’s wife was sitting at our table. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it would have been if my mother opened a gift wrapped in homemade, dusty rags made by a guy who wears a plastic apron to work?"
"He’s my father!"
"And I am your husband! The man who provides this house, that car in the driveway, and the future our son is going to inherit!" Brandon stood up, smoothing down his shirt. "My father is closing the riverfront financing deal today with First National Bank. We’re moving into the billionaire bracket by the end of the quarter. I won't have our social standing ruined by your father's working-class sentimentality. Tell him to stay at his high school stove where he belongs."
Before Chloe could answer, Brandon’s phone rang. The caller ID showed Richard Sterling — Father.
Brandon smiled arrogance, sliding his thumb across the screen. "Hey, Dad. Are we all set for the signing at the bank this afternoon?"
"Brandon! Where the hell are you?!" Richard Sterling’s voice thundered through the speaker, so loud that Chloe could hear every word from six feet away. The tone was panicked, devoid of the old man's usual supreme confidence.
Brandon’s smile faltered. "I'm at home, Dad. Just finishing breakfast. What's wrong?"
"Get down to the corporate headquarters right now!" Richard yelled. "First National just suspended our credit line! The city building inspector just issued a full stop-work order on the entire riverfront site citing twenty-four environmental non-compliance violations!"
Brandon’s heart gave a sudden, violent thump against his ribs. "What?! Stop-work order? Dad, we passed environmental inspection two weeks ago! We dropped fifty thousand dollars in campaign donations to the zoning board chairman!"
"Well, someone above the zoning board chairman just stepped on us!" Richard shouted. "And that’s not the worst of it. The primary holder of our forty-million-dollar development loan just filed a motion for emergency restructuring in the County Common Pleas Court!"
"Who is the loan holder?" Brandon asked, sweat suddenly breaking out along his hairline. "It’s First National, right?"
"First National sold the primary debt note six months ago to Apex Capital Trust!" Richard cried out, his voice cracking. "And Apex’s senior legal council just served us with a notice of default! They’re calling in the entire forty million dollars... due in seventy-two hours!"
Brandon backed away from the kitchen island, his legs suddenly feeling weak. "Seventy-two hours? Dad, we don't have forty million in cash! All our capital is tied up in land acquisition!"
"I know that, you idiot!" Richard raged. "The lead prosecutor from Vance, Sterling & Associates is coming to our headquarters at 11:00 AM to present the formal demand! Get your ass down here now!"
The call disconnected.
Brandon stood in the middle of his pristine kitchen, his face pale, his breath short. He looked at Chloe, who was staring at him in confusion.

"Is... is everything okay?" Chloe asked softly.
Brandon didn't answer. He threw his iPad into his leather briefcase, grabbed his car keys, and sprinted out the front door without saying another word.
