Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Past

Three days later, the rain finally stopped, leaving behind a crisp, clear autumn morning.
Armed with a police escort provided under the terms of the protection order, Grace returned to the house on Elm Street to pack her and Camila’s remaining personal belongings.
The house was cold and silent. Oscar’s expensive golf clubs, designer coats, and luxury watch boxes were gone—he had posted bail late yesterday evening using his mother’s collateral and was currently staying at Theresa’s estate under strict curfew conditions.
Grace walked through the rooms, packing Camila’s clothes, toys, and childhood photos into large boxes. She deliberately left behind everything Oscar had ever bought her—the cheap jewelry he used as grand apologies, the dresses he picked out to fit his family's social standards. She wanted nothing that smelled of his presence.
As she cleared out the master bedroom closet, she found a locked metallic box hidden behind Oscar’s suit jackets on the top shelf. It was a heavy security box with a combination lock.
Grace recognized the box. It had belonged to Oscar’s late father, who had passed away eight years ago.
She took a heavy screwdriver from the kitchen tool drawer, wedged it into the seam of the latch, and hammered down with all her weight. The lock snapped open with a sharp metallic crack.
Inside the box were several official-looking legal folders, financial ledgers, and bank statements dating back nearly ten years.
Curious, Grace sat on the floor and began flipping through the documents. What she found turned her blood cold.
Theresa Miller’s late husband hadn't left her a massive fortune as Theresa had always boasted to the town. He had died deeply in debt, leaving behind failing investments and fraudulent real estate holdings. For the past decade, Theresa had been living an elaborate lie, maintaining a lavish lifestyle, expensive clothes, and country club memberships by taking out predatory loans and siphoning money from Oscar’s trust accounts.
And there was more.
Four years ago, Theresa had attempted to purchase the commercial property where Miller’s Corner stood. Eleanor had refused to sell, stating that the land had been in the Miller family for generations and would be passed down to Grace.
Theresa had taken out a hidden secondary mortgage on her own home to attempt a hostile buyout of the block through a shell corporation called Apex Holdings. When Eleanor refused every offer, Theresa’s shell company defaulted on the loan payments, leaving Theresa facing complete bankruptcy within six months.
Grace stared at the financial ledgers in shock.
Theresa didn't just hate Eleanor because of social snobbery. Theresa was facing total financial ruin, and the only way she could save herself was if Eleanor died, the diner was inherited by Grace, and Oscar—as Grace’s husband—manipulated Grace into selling the land to pay off Theresa's debts.
The entire marriage—Oscar’s pursuit of Grace, Theresa’s relentless pressure, the constant demands—had been part of a long-term, calculated financial trap designed to steal Eleanor's property.
Grace clutched the documents to her chest, her jaw tight.

"It was all a lie," she whispered to the empty room. "Every single second of it."
She packed the metal box directly into her bag and walked out of the house, locking the door behind her for the very last time.
