Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By three o'clock in the afternoon, the storm outside had intensified, turning the sky into a dark gray sheet of pouring rain. Grace and Camila were temporarily staying at a quiet, secure long-stay hotel on the outskirts of town, arranged and paid for through Marcus Vance’s office.

Grace sat by the window, watching the rain hit the glass, while Camila played happily on the carpet with a set of new drawing markers Marcus’s secretary had bought for her.

For the first time in days, Camila had eaten a full lunch—chicken soup, fresh bread, and fruit. The hollow, frightened look in her small eyes was beginning to fade, replaced by the natural warmth of childhood.

Grace’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was an unknown number.

She hesitated, then picked it up, pressing the speaker button. "Hello?"

"Grace. You ungrateful, vicious little viper."

It was Theresa’s voice. But the polished, condescending tone she had used for years was completely gone. In its place was a raw, hysterical rage that sounded almost animalistic.

"Theresa," Grace said calmly, her heart surprisingly steady. "I told you never to call me again."

"You ruined my daughter’s life!" Theresa shrieked through the speaker. "The police just pulled up to Paula’s house! They are towing her SUV! They have warrants, Grace! Warrants for Paula and Oscar!"

"They hit my mother, Theresa," Grace replied, her voice dropping into a cold, hard cadence. "Paula struck her with her car, and Oscar helped cover it up. They belong in prison."

"Your mother was a nobody!" Theresa screamed, losing all control. "A pathetic, low-class cook who belonged behind a grease trap! My daughter has a future! Oscar has a career! Do you think anyone will care about a dead old woman when I get my lawyers involved? I will spend every dime I have to destroy you, Grace! I will make sure you end up on the street begging for food! And I will take Camila from you and teach her to hate your very name!"

Grace listened to the poison spewing from the speaker, but she didn't feel the paralyzing fear she used to feel. The terrifying monster that had ruled her life for six years was finally exposed for what she truly was: a terrified, pathetic bully whose power was evaporating.

"You won't take anything from me, Theresa," Grace said softly. "You've already lost. Oscar is ruined. Paula is going to prison. And you... you get to sit in your big, empty house, knowing that everyone in this town finally knows what kind of monster you are."

"You bitch—!"

Grace ended the call. She immediately blocked the number and turned off the phone’s cellular signal, leaving only Marcus Vance’s direct line open on a secondary encrypted app he had installed for her.

Twenty minutes later, Marcus called.

"Grace," Marcus’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and professional. "The State Police have officially executed the search warrants. They seized Paula’s black SUV from her garage. Preliminary forensic sweeps under black light showed clear traces of blood and fiber evidence on the undercarriage, despite their attempts to clean it."

Grace closed her eyes, tears of relief leaking down her cheeks. "Did they arrest them?"

"Paula Miller was taken into custody twenty minutes ago at her home," Marcus confirmed. "She broke down immediately during initial questioning and admitted that Oscar was in the car with her. Oscar was arrested at his office an hour ago in front of his entire corporate team. His boss fired him on the spot."

Grace let out a ragged breath. "And Theresa?"

"Theresa is currently under investigation for obstruction of justice and solicitation of a felony," Marcus said. "She hasn't been arrested yet because her lawyers are trying to shield her, but the prosecutor told me her indictment is coming. The video from your mother’s diner clearly shows her directing the clean-up and coordinating their actions."

"Thank you, Marcus," Grace whispered. "It’s really over, isn't it?"

"The criminal process is just starting, Grace," Marcus cautioned gently. "They will try to post bail, and their lawyers will fight hard to stall the trial. But the physical evidence is overwhelming. For now, you and Camila are safe. The temporary protection order is in full effect. If any of them comes within five hundred yards of you, they will be thrown back in jail instantly."

Grace looked across the room at Camila, who was currently drawing a sun with a yellow marker on a white piece of paper.

"We're going to rebuild, Marcus," Grace said, her voice filled with a quiet strength she hadn't known she possessed. "I'm going to reopen my mother's diner."
