Chapter 7 - The Lion's Trap

Marcus laughed—a cruel, high-pitched sound that echoed off the cold steel walls. He tightened his grip on Ren’s hair, pulling her back against his chest, the sharp edge of the blade pressing into the soft skin of her neck. A tiny drop of crimson blood trickled down her collarbone.

"You've gone soft, Orion!" Marcus sneered, his eyes gleefully watching the tension in his former boss's frame. "The great Orion Steel, falling for a dirt-poor nurse from the woods! You sacrificed your father’s empire for a civilian!"

"She isn't a civilian," Orion growled, his knuckles white as he held his rifle steady. "She’s the woman who saved my father's life. And she is the last mistake you will ever make."

Ren didn't panic. The pain in her scalp was searing, and the cold steel on her throat was dangerous, but she caught Orion’s eyes across the dark room.

He gave her a microscopic nod—a silent command forged in the trust they had built over twelve harrowing hours.

Ren reacted instantly. Instead of pulling away from the blade, she slammed her head backward with all her strength, her skull cracking hard against Marcus's nose.

Marcus roared in pain as his nose shattered, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second. Ren reached down, grabbed his wrist, and twisted it outward using a military joint lock, driving her elbow hard into his exposed ribs.

POP!

Marcus cried out as his knife clattered to the floor.

BANG!

A single shot from Orion’s rifle cut through the air. The bullet tore through Marcus’s shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him against the metal railing.

Orion leaped down from the ten-foot gantry, landing like a predator. Before Marcus could hit the floor, Orion grabbed him by the throat, lifting the heavy man off his feet with one arm and slamming him viciously into the concrete wall.

"You betrayed my father," Orion whispered, his face inches from the traitor's. "You brought violence into this woman's home. You threatened her life."

"Orion... please..." Marcus choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Orion's iron grip. "We were... brothers..."

"Brothers don't shoot their fathers in the chest," Orion said coldly.

With a swift, devastating turn of his wrist, Orion snapped Marcus’s neck. The traitor’s eyes rolled back, and his body went limp, dropping to the floor like a sack of stone.

Silence descended upon the generator room, broken only by the heavy, echoing sound of Orion’s breathing.

Ren stood nearby, chest heaving, holding her neck where the small cut was bleeding. She looked at Orion. He was covered in blood, his tactical vest torn, his body bruised—a true demon of the underworld. Yet, as he turned toward her, the lethal, terrifying rage in his gray eyes instantly melted away into absolute, desperate concern.

He crossed the room in two massive strides, grabbing her face gently between his large, bloodied hands. He examined her neck, his thumbs wiping away the blood with trembling delicacy.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice rough, shaking with an emotion he had never felt in his entire life: fear. Not fear for himself, but fear of losing her. "Ren... answer me. Are you hurt?"

"I'm okay," Ren whispered, placing her small hands over his dirty, scarred wrists. "I'm okay, Orion."

Orion pulled her into his chest, wrapping his powerful arms around her, burying his face into her hair. He held her with a fiercer, desperate intensity, as if anchoring himself to the only good thing left in his broken world. Ren didn't pull away. She wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his pounding chest, letting his overwhelming strength wash away her exhaustion.

From the floor behind them, a frantic crawling sound broke the moment.

Judge Vance was scrambling toward the exit door, his hands slick with sweat, trying to crawl out of the generator room.

Orion released Ren slowly, turning his head toward the coward on the floor. His expression hardened back into cold, unforgiving steel.

"Where do you think you're going, Judge?" Orion asked softly.

Vance turned around, weeping, his face covered in tears and dirt. "Please! Don't kill me! I'll give you whatever you want! I have offshore accounts in the Caymans! Fifty million dollars! Just let me live!"

Ren stepped forward beside Orion, looking down at the man who had stolen her life. "Death is too easy for you, Vance."

Orion glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. "What do you have in mind, Nurse Callaway?"

Ren pointed toward the security terminal on the wall. "The bunker’s main server is connected to the city’s encrypted judicial network. If we upload the unredacted autopsy file of Meadow, along with Marcus’s recorded phone logs detailing Vance’s financial bribes, it will auto-transmit directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Vance’s face turned ghostly white. "No... no! That will ruin me! I'll spend the rest of my life in a federal maximum-security prison!"

May you like

"Exactly," Ren said, her voice filled with absolute, unyielding triumph. "You're going to rot in a dark cell, thinking about what you did to your daughter and what you tried to do to me."

Orion smirked, pulling up the console interface. "I'll handle the upload. Consider it my personal gift to you, Ren."
