Chapter 5 - The War Begins

Alexander’s presence instantly altered the gravitational pull of the room. He walked past Sophia as if she were made of air, stepping directly in front of Grace and his three sons. His massive frame completely shielded them from his ex-wife.
"Get out of my house, Sophia," Alexander commanded, his voice unnervingly quiet, laced with pure ice.
"This is still legally my joint property until the final divorce settlement is signed, Alexander," Sophia sneered, crossing her arms, though a flicker of fear passed through her eyes at his anger. "I came to visit my beloved sons. And what do I find? You've handed them over to a low-class nanny who allows them to live like wild animals!"
"Beloved sons?" Alexander let out a dark, bitter laugh. "You haven't called them once in seven months! You didn't send a card on their birthday! You left a note on stationery asking for Paris real estate, Sophia. You don't care about these boys!"
"I was recovering from the emotional trauma of being married to a workaholic sociopath!" Sophia snapped, her mask dropping to reveal deep malice. "And now, I am back to claim what is mine. My legal team has filed for emergency full custody. When Judge Harrison sees how unstable this home is—how you have abandoned them to common servants—she will grant me full custody by the end of the week."
Carter began to cry silently, hiding his face in Thomas's shoulder.
Grace couldn't take it anymore. She knelt down, wrapping her arms around all three boys, whispering gentle, comforting words into their ears. "It's okay, my brave knights. Nobody is taking you anywhere. I'm right here. Your dad is right here."
Alexander heard her words, and something inside him clicked—a sudden, profound realization. He wasn't fighting this battle alone anymore. For months, he had been fighting with money, lawyers, and cold strategy. But Grace had given him something far more powerful: a reason to feel like a real father again.
"You have five seconds to leave this estate, Sophia," Alexander said, stepping directly up to his ex-wife, his tall frame towering over her. "If you do not turn around and walk out those doors, I will have security physically escort you off the premises, and I will publish the financial records of your private off-shore accounts that my investigators uncovered last night. Let's see how your custody petition holds up when the judge sees you funneling millions into fake charities in Monaco."
Sophia’s face drained of all color. Her lips trembled with rage. "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me," Alexander whispered.
Sophia glared at him, then threw a venomous look at Grace, who was holding the three boys tightly. "This isn't over, Alexander. Enjoy your little fake family while it lasts."
She turned on her high heels and swept out of the conservatory, her heels clicking angrily down the grand hallway until the massive front doors slammed shut.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by Carter's quiet, lingering sobs.
Alexander turned back to his children. He dropped down to his knees on the paint-splattered paper, ignoring the fact that his custom, thousands-of-dollars suit was being ruined by bright blue and yellow paint.
He looked at Carter, Thomas, and Finn. For the first time in his life, the powerful, untouchable Alexander Whitman looked completely broken, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.
"I’m sorry," Alexander whispered, his voice cracking with raw emotion. "I’m so sorry I wasn't here to protect you. I’m so sorry I left you alone in this huge, empty house."
Finn looked up from Grace's shoulder. He reached out a small, paint-covered hand and gently touched his father’s cheek, leaving a smear of sky-blue paint across Alexander's jawline.
"Dad... don't be sad," Finn whispered softly.
Alexander let out a choked sound that was half-sob, half-laugh. He pulled all three of his sons into his massive arms, hugging them tightly against his chest for the first time in almost a year. The boys clung to him, breaking into soft tears of relief.

Grace sat nearby, wiping a tear from her own cheek, her heart overflowing with a deep, unexpected warmth.
As Alexander held his children, he looked up across their small heads, his dark eyes locking onto Grace's. In that shared, silent moment, an unspoken bond was forged between them—a promise to stand together, no matter what storm was coming.
