Chapter 9 - Dawn Over the Harbor

The storm had finally passed by 6:30 a.m.

The first rays of golden morning light broke through the retreating storm clouds, painting the sky in soft shades of orange, pink, and pale gold over the calm waters of the harbor.

Inside the penthouse, Sarah sat by the large glass window in the living room, holding a mug of fresh coffee. Emma sat beside her on the rug, playing quietly with a set of wooden building blocks Marcus had retrieved from the storage room downstairs.

The express elevator chimed softly.

The doors slid open, and Vincent walked in.

He looked exhausted. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his white shirt was stained with rain and soot around the cuffs. But as he stepped into the living room and saw Emma sitting safely in the sunlight, the harshness in his face melted away entirely.

Sarah stood up, setting her mug down. "Is it over?"

Vincent walked over to them, sinking down onto one knee beside Emma. He reached out and gently picked up one of the wooden blocks, handing it to the little girl.

"It's over," Vincent said quietly. "Victor was arrested at the foundry. The federal government has seized his entire network. He will never leave a maximum-security prison for the rest of his life."

Emma looked up at Vincent, her small face bathed in the bright morning light. "Uncle Vincent?"

Vincent’s heart swelled, a sensation so intense it felt almost painful in his chest. "Yes, sweetheart?"

"Is Papa coming back?" she asked softly.

Sarah felt a tear slip down her cheek, holding her breath as she waited for Vincent’s answer.

Vincent took Emma’s small hand in his large, calloused palm. "Your papa went to a place where he can rest, Emma. He was a very brave man. He made sure you were safe."

Emma looked down at her small shoes, then looked at Sarah, and finally back at Vincent. "Will I have to live in the dark room again?"

"Never," Vincent swore, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakable truth. "You are going to live here. In the light. You are going to have the biggest bedroom in this city, a garden to play in, and as many toys as you want."

He looked up at Sarah, his steel-gray eyes filled with a deep, profound gratitude that no amount of money could ever buy.

"And if Miss Chen will agree," Vincent added softly, "she’s going to help me make sure you grow up into the strongest, happiest girl in the world."

Sarah looked at the man standing before her—the dangerous mafia boss who had dismantled an empire in six hours just to keep a promise to a dead man and a terrified child.

"I’m a night-shift nurse, Vincent," Sarah smiled, wiping the tear from her face. "I'm used to keeping watch until the sun comes up."

"Then your shift is over, Sarah," Vincent said, standing up and offering her his hand. "Welcome home."
