Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Terrace

That evening, a private celebration was held at the Cade estate.

The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had once hung over the mansion like a shroud was completely gone. Warm sunlight flooded through opened velvet curtains, filling the grand hallways with light, music, and the delicious scent of fresh flowers.

After dinner, Elias took Celeste’s hand and led her away from the guests, guiding her up to the grand terrace overlooking the sprawling, manicured gardens and the glittering skyline of Chicago in the distance.

The cool evening breeze ruffled Celeste’s hair. Elias stepped up behind her, wrapping a plush cashmere shawl around her shoulders, then pulling her gently back against his warm, broad chest.

"Are you happy, Celeste?" Elias whispered softly against her ear.

Celeste leaned her head back against his shoulder, looking out at the city lights. "I feel like I'm living in a dream, Elias. A year ago, I was sitting in a freezing apartment with an eviction notice, wondering if my life had any purpose left. And now..."

She turned around in his arms, resting her hands on his chest, looking up into those vivid ice-blue eyes that had once frightened her, but now felt like her safest home.

"...now I have everything I ever prayed for."

Elias reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box. He didn't drop to one knee; instead, he held her gaze with unwavering, deep sincerity as he popped the latch open.

Inside rested a magnificent ring—a flawless, emerald-cut blue sapphire surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds, gleaming brightly beneath the moonlight.

"This sapphire belonged to my great-grandmother," Elias said softly, his voice trembling slightly with rare vulnerability. "It was meant to be given to the woman who would stand beside the head of the family not as a trophy, but as his equal, his protector, and his heart."

He looked into her brown eyes, his breath hitching.

"Celeste Harlow, you saved my life, healed my soul, and taught me how to love. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my Chairman, and my forever?"

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness overflowed Celeste’s lashes, spilling down her cheeks like liquid diamonds. She smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that lit up the dark night.

"Yes, Elias," she whispered, her voice full of emotion. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

Elias slipped the ring onto her finger—a perfect fit. Then, he gathered her into his arms, lifting her up, and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, reverent kiss that sealed their souls together forever.
