Chapter 7 - The Aftermath of Fire

A single, muffled report echoed through the grand ballroom. Julian collapsed onto the marble floor, motionless.

Silence descended upon the estate, heavy, profound, and absolute.

Dominic slowly holstered his weapon, his expression unreadable as he turned back to face the gathered leaders of the Five Families. The room was motionless, every boss staring at him with a renewed, terrifying respect. He had survived an assassination, executed the traitor in front of the entire underworld council, and resecured his throne in a single night.

"The Moretti Syndicate remains unbroken," Dominic announced, his voice carrying an unyielding command. "Business continues as normal. Anyone who harbors remnants of Julian's faction will share his fate."

The bosses nodded in silent, unanimous agreement, bowing their heads respectfully as Dominic turned away from the table.

He walked over to Hannah, who was standing near the grand archway. Her face was slightly pale, her hands trembling imperceptibly against the silk fabric of her gown. She had just witnessed an execution—the harsh, bloody reality of the world Dominic ruled.

"Are you alright?" Dominic asked softly, his tone completely shifting from the cold killer to gentle concern. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing against her cheek. "I tried to keep you away from the violence."

"I knew what world you lived in, Dominic," Hannah whispered, looking into his hazel eyes. "I'm not made of glass. I survived poverty on the streets of Chicago—I know that sometimes monsters have to be stopped."

Dominic’s heart swelled with a feeling he hadn't experienced in years. He slipped his arm around her waist, leading her out of the ballroom toward the private living quarters on the upper floor of the mansion.

In the master suite, Jade was sitting on a plush velvet armchair, carefully rocking little Leo to sleep. When she saw Hannah and Dominic walk in, she let out a massive sigh of relief, jumping up to hug her sister tightly.

"Sis! We heard a loud noise down there! Is it over?" Jade asked, tears brimming in her eyes.

"It's over, Jade," Hannah reassured her, smoothing her sister's hair. "We're safe now."

Dominic walked over to the crib, looking down at his son. Leo opened his little eyes, giving a small, gummy smile as he saw his father's face. Dominic reached down, lifting the infant carefully into his arms, pressing his forehead against the baby's tiny temple.

"He's safe because of you two," Dominic said, turning to face Hannah and Jade. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out two thick leather folders, handing them to Hannah.

"What's this?" she asked.

"A full pardon and legal clearance from the federal prosecutor's office, signed by the governor," Dominic explained. "You and Jade are officially protected under the high-level security clearance of the Moretti Enterprise. No one will ever ask you where you came from, no landlord will ever harass you, and your bank accounts have been credited with a trust fund that will ensure neither of you ever has to worry about money, food, or shelter for the rest of your lives."

Hannah stared at the documents, her eyes wide with shock. "Dominic... this... this is millions of dollars."

"It's a fraction of what your bravery is worth," Dominic said softly. "There is a private jet waiting at O'Hare airport right now. It can take you and Jade anywhere in the world—London, Paris, Tokyo. A fresh start, completely clean, away from the blood and darkness of my life."

Hannah looked down at the paper, then up at Dominic holding little Leo.

A heavy, suffocating silence filled the room. The offer was everything she had ever dreamed of when she was working late night shifts at the diner, shivering in the cold rain—security, wealth, freedom.

Yet, as she looked at Dominic’s eyes, she saw a deep, hidden pain. He was giving her freedom because he loved her enough to let her go, believing a innocent girl like her deserved better than a life bound to a mafia king.

"You're giving me a choice?" Hannah asked quietly.

"I will never force you to stay in my dark world, Hannah," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a raspy whisper. "You deserve light."

May you like

Hannah walked slowly toward him, stopping inches from his chest. She looked up into his face, reaching out to gently touch the hard jawline that she had patched up in the dark hours of the morning.

"What if the light I want..." Hannah whispered, "...is right here with you?"
