Chapter 9 - The House on Willow Creek

Six months later. October 2026.

The Oregon countryside was a sweeping tapestry of brilliant gold, deep amber, and fiery crimson as autumn settled over the valley.

On a twenty-acre farm near the foothills of the mountains, a cozy two-story farmhouse sat surrounded by pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and a wide wooden porch.

In the front yard, a sleek golden retriever puppy tumbled through a pile of crisp fallen leaves, chasing a bright red rubber ball.

Ashley—now eight years old—was running after the puppy, her laughter echoing clearly across the quiet valley. She wore denim overalls, brown leather boots, and a flannel shirt, her hair tied back in two neat braids.

Andrew stood on the wrap-around porch, wearing a flannel jacket, holding a pair of garden shears. His shoulder had fully healed, his frame filled out with health, strength, and quiet confidence.

A white police cruiser pulled up the long gravel driveway, its tires crunching softly against the stones.

Officer Natalie Reed stepped out of the vehicle, dressed in casual clothes—jeans and a comfortable wool sweater—on her way back from a regional law enforcement conference in Eugene.

"Natalie!" Ashley squealed, dropping the rubber ball and sprinting across the lawn.

She threw her small arms around Natalie’s waist, hugging her with all her strength.

Natalie crouched down, hugging her back tightly, a wide, genuine smile lighting up her face. "Look at you, Ashley! You’re growing so fast!"

"I have my own pumpkin patch!" Ashley reported proudly, pulling Natalie by the hand toward the side of the house. "And Daddy says we’re going to bake three apple pies tonight!"

Andrew walked down the porch steps, a broad, warm smile on his face as he extended his hand to Natalie. "It’s good to see you, Natalie."

"It’s good to be here, Andrew," Natalie said, shaking his hand firmly. "How is the farm treating you?"

"It’s quiet," Andrew said, looking out over the golden hills and the blue sky above. "No loud roads, no corporate clinics... just peace."

From the passenger side of Natalie’s cruiser, the door opened, and Eric stepped out, carrying a large cardboard box tied with a yellow ribbon.

"Did somebody say apple pie?" Eric called out with a grin.

"Eric!" Ashley cheered, running over to give the former 911 operator a massive high-five.

"I brought a little housewarming gift for the farm," Eric said, setting the box down on the wooden porch table.

Ashley carefully untied the ribbon and opened the cardboard flaps.

Inside rested a beautiful, hand-carved wooden sign meant to be mounted above the front gate of the farm.

Carved into the rich cedar wood in bold, elegant letters were five words:

May you like

THE HEAVEN WE BUILT TOGETHER

Ashley touched the smooth wood with her fingers, her hazel eyes shining with absolute happiness.
