Chapter 8 - The Reunion

Two weeks later.
The afternoon sun was warm and bright, melting the last remnants of the winter snow off the green lawn of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
In the pediatric courtyard, a small wooden bench sat near a flower bed filled with early spring tulips.
Seven-year-old Ashley sat on the bench wearing a bright pink winter coat and a yellow wool hat. Her cheeks were full and pink, her hazel eyes bright with health and energy. The organ toxicity was entirely gone, her body fully restored under proper, safe medical care.
Beside her sat Andrew. His left arm was held securely in a blue sling, and a neat white bandage covered the healing scar on his forehead, but his face was bright, filled with a deep, peaceful warmth.
He was holding a small red plastic bowl filled with vegetable soup.
"Is it the good soup, Daddy?" Ashley asked, looking at him with wide, happy eyes.
"It’s the best soup in the world, sweetheart," Andrew smiled, feeding her a small spoonful. "Made right here in the hospital cafeteria."
From the edge of the courtyard, Officer Natalie and Eric stood watching them, each holding a cup of hot coffee.
"The state attorney dropped all remaining inquiry into Andrew’s home status this morning," Eric said, taking a sip of his coffee. "Vanguard Pharmaceuticals agreed to a ten-million-dollar private settlement for Ashley's medical trust fund."
"They're going to buy a small farm out in the valley," Natalie smiled. "Away from highways, corporate clinics, and nosy neighbors. Just the two of them, a dog, and a big garden."
"And Buddy?" Eric asked teasingly.
"Buddy got a full surgical repair from the head of pediatric surgery," Natalie laughed. "New stuffing, brand-new blue thread along his back, and a tiny official police badge pinned to his collar."
Ashley spotted them from the bench and waved her small hand wildly. "Natalie! Eric! Come look!"
The two of them walked across the sunny courtyard, joining the small family by the tulip beds.
Andrew stood up slowly, using his good arm to shake Eric’s hand, then turned to Natalie.

"There aren't enough words in any language, Officer Reed," Andrew said, his voice thick with emotion. "You believed in me when everyone else was calling me a monster."
"I didn't believe in a story, Andrew," Natalie said softly. "I believed in the grocery list on your kitchen table. A man who writes down 'electrolyte drinks and Ashley's medicine' isn't a man who leaves his child."
