Chapter 7 - The Unbreakable Bond

By Saturday morning, news of the wilderness rescue had swept through the city.

Trent Vance sat in a private room at St. Jude’s Hospital, his ankle wrapped in a cast, drinking warm soup. His father, Julian Vance, sat in a chair beside the bed, looking exhausted and humbled.

The door opened, and Leo walked in, his hands wrapped in light bandages from rope burns, accompanied by his father David.

Trent looked up, his eyes filling with tears as he looked at the boy he had mocked for months.

"Leo..." Trent whispered, his voice trembling. "I... I'm sorry. I was an idiot. You saved my life. You came down into that dark gorge when you could have just stayed in the cabin."

Leo walked over to the bed, setting a small wooden carving of a Navy trident—something he had carved during his summer camp—on the bedside table.

"In the team," Leo said softly, repeating the words Luke had told him at the flagpole, "we don't leave people behind. It doesn't matter who you are."

Julian Vance slowly stood up from his chair.

The wealthy developer, who had spent months trying to destroy David Miller’s business and reputation, looked at the small mechanic’s son with deep, overwhelming shame.

Julian stepped forward, extending his hand to David Miller.

"Mr. Miller," Julian said, his voice breaking. "I... I don't know how to ask for your forgiveness. I tried to take your livelihood, and your son gave me back my boy."

David looked at Julian’s outstretched hand for a long moment. Then, with the calm dignity that had carried him through years of hardship, David shook the developer’s hand.

"We don't hold debts on children's lives, Mr. Vance," David said quietly. "Let's just make sure our town builds better things from now on."

That afternoon, Julian Vance held a press conference on the steps of City Hall. He announced the permanent dissolution of Vanguard Property Holdings' commercial project and declared that his firm was donating three million dollars to establish the Miller-Harris Foundation for Veteran Vocational Training, dedicated to building free technical workshops for returning servicemen across the state.
