Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Three years passed.

It was a crisp, clear September morning at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The terminal was packed with busy travelers, families, and announcements blaring over the loudspeakers.

At Gate 19, a young man sat on the waiting bench. He was sixteen years old now, tall, athletic, with sharp blue eyes and a backpack slung over his shoulder. On his lap sat a leather portfolio containing his official appointment letter to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

It was Leo Miller.

Beside him sat his father, David, looking healthy, prosperous, and proud, wearing a jacket embossed with the logo of Miller & Son Engineering.

"You got everything, son?" David asked, rubbing Leo’s shoulder.

"Got my documents, got my boots, got my ticket," Leo smiled, checking his watch. Flight 412 to Washington, D.C.

"Final boarding call for Flight 412," the gate agent announced.

Leo stood up, hugging his father tightly. "I'll call you as soon as I land in Annapolis, Dad. I promise."

"I know you will, Leo," David said, his voice thick with pride. "Go show them what a Miller can do."

Leo walked down the jet bridge, holding his boarding pass. As he reached the airplane door, he paused and looked back into the busy terminal crowd.

Near the center kiosk stood Lieutenant Luke Harris and Chief Petty Officer Marcus Harris, both wearing civilian clothes, holding two fingers to their brows in a quiet, subtle salute.

Leo smiled, returned the salute with crisp, perfect precision, and stepped onto the plane.

He looked out the oval window as the jet roared down the runway, lifting high into the clear blue sky above Texas.

He looked down at his denim jacket resting on his lap—the jacket decorated with patches given to him by forty Navy SEALs—and held the silver trident pin tucked inside his pocket.

The boy who had missed his flight to help a wounded soldier was finally taking off, flying toward a horizon unlimited, unbowed, and built on an unbreakable foundation of honor, love, and service.
