Chapter 8 - The Proposal on Willow Creek

The autumn leaves had returned to Pine Hollow, turning the hills into a fiery canopy of scarlet and gold once again.

Exactly one year to the day since Julian had first parked his car outside the tired little house on Willow Creek Road, he stood on the restored wooden dock down by the lake.

The sun was setting behind the hills, casting a brilliant orange and purple glow across the calm water. A cool autumn breeze rustled through the oak trees, bringing with it the sweet smell of woodsmoke and damp earth.

Footsteps sounded on the wooden planks behind him.

Nora walked down the dock, wearing a thick knit sweater and jeans. She stopped beside him, leaning her shoulder against his arm as they looked out over the sunset together.

"One year," Nora said softly.

Julian looked down at her. "One year."

"I was so terrified of you that night," Nora laughed quietly, remembering the rain and the clipboard. "I thought you were a government inspector coming to tell me I wasn't doing enough for Iris."

"I was a broken man hiding behind a clipboard," Julian said, turning to face her completely. He reached into his coat pocket. "I was looking for a ghost. I didn't know I was going to find my life."

Julian dropped to one knee on the wooden dock.

Nora gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears instantly filled her eyes.

Julian pulled out a small, mahogany ring box and opened it. Inside sat a brilliant, antique diamond ring—a family heirloom that had belonged to his grandmother, simple, timeless, and completely devoid of ostentation.

"Nora," Julian said, his voice steady, rich, and filled with a devotion that shook him to his core. "You opened your door to a stranger in the rain. You showed me what love looks like when it has no money, no fame, and no reason to keep going except pure grace. You saved my life. I want to spend the rest of my days honoring Owen's memory, protecting Iris, and loving you with everything I have."

He looked up into her crying eyes. "Will you marry me?"

Nora dropped to her knees right there on the dock, throwing her arms around his neck and pulling him into a deep, fierce embrace.

"Yes!" she sobbed into his shoulder, her voice echoing across the quiet lake. "Yes, Julian! A thousand times yes!"

From the top of the grassy hill near the barn, Iris came running down the slope, holding Captain Clover above her head, her happy squeals echoing through the autumn evening.

"Did she say yes? Did she say yes?!" Iris shouted as she reached the dock.

Julian pulled both of them into his arms, holding his wife and his daughter tight against his chest as the last golden light of the sun dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a world filled with light, heat, and limitless hope.
