Chapter 6: The Quiet After the Storm

Six months later, the sun was shining on a small cottage in the Pacific Northwest. I sat on the porch, looking out at the ocean. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely mine.
The divorce had been messy, but the evidence I provided ensured that Mark walked away with nothing but legal fees and a prison sentence for corporate fraud. James had gotten his revenge, though he too had lost his wife and his reputation in the process. We didn’t speak anymore. The bond forged in hatred had dissolved the moment the goal was achieved.
I had changed my name back. I was Anna again. Not the wife, not the victim, just Anna.
I looked down at a book in my lap. I had finally started that interior design business I had put on hold for ten years to support Mark’s "career." My first client was a young woman who had just left a toxic situation of her own. We spent the afternoon talking about color palettes, not about the past.

I stood up and stretched, feeling the weightlessness of a life unburdened. A dog barked—a golden retriever I had adopted just last week—and I laughed. It wasn't the laughter of a woman in love with a man, but the laughter of a woman in love with her own freedom.
The past was a closed book. The future, for the first time in ten years, was completely blank. And for that, I was grateful. I walked inside, made myself a cup of tea, and began my day, knowing that everything I had, I had earned, and everything I was, was entirely my own.
