Chapter 5: The Collapse

The trap snapped shut on the night of the firm’s annual charity gala. Mark was confident, his arm around me, showing me off as the "perfect couple" to the very people he was stealing from.
James was there, too. He was standing by the bar, watching. When Mark went to the stage to give his speech about integrity and growth, I saw James nod at me.
I pulled out my phone and sent one email—to the Board of Directors, to the IRS, and to the local news. It contained every document, every bank transfer, and the transcripts of the phone calls I had recorded.
As Mark began to speak, the room went quiet. Phones began to vibrate. Whispers turned into shocked murmurs. Then, the police walked in.
Mark’s face went white as he saw the officers approaching the stage. He looked at me—he saw me standing by the back exit, no longer the timid, quiet wife. He saw the cold, clear look of a woman who had finally reclaimed her life.
