Chapter 5 - The Snake at the Gala

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered under massive crystal chandeliers.

New York’s high society—politicians, real estate tycoons, shipping magnates, and corrupt officials—swirled across the polished marble floor in silk gowns and tailored tuxedos, sipping champagne to the smooth tunes of a live jazz orchestra.

At the center of the room stood Arthur Vance.

At sixty-one, Vance looked every bit the distinguished elder statesman of Manhattan commerce. His silver hair was meticulously styled, his tuxedo was custom-tailored, and his broad, charismatic smile hid a soul as ruthless as a meat cleaver.

"Arthur! Magnificent turnout tonight!" a city councilman cheered, clinking glasses with him.

"Public service is its own reward, George," Vance laughed softly, taking a sip of his vintage champagne.

Near the grand entrance, the crowd suddenly parted. A low hush rippled across the room.

Alessandro DeLuca stepped into the ballroom.

He looked majestic, dangerous, and completely dominant in a midnight-black velvet tuxedo. But what drew every eye in the room was not the mafia kingpin—it was the young woman floating beside him on his arm.

Cassidy Miller looked breathtaking.

She wore a floor-length emerald green silk gown that draped flawlessly over her slender frame, exposing her elegant shoulders. Her dark hair was styled into a soft, sophisticated updo, held in place by a subtle diamond hairpin. Her face, no longer pale with exhaustion, radiated a sharp, striking beauty that commanded instant respect.

Arthur Vance’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second when he saw Alessandro walk in alive, well, and un-indicted.

Why isn't he in federal custody? Vance thought, his heart skipping a beat. Preston was supposed to close the Panamanian deal three days ago!

Suppressing his sudden anxiety, Vance forced a warm, broad smile onto his face and walked over to meet them, holding out his hand.

"Alessandro! My dear friend!" Vance cheered smoothly. "I was beginning to think you wouldn't make it tonight!"

Alessandro accepted the handshake, his grip firm, his face a polite, unreadable mask. "I would never miss your special night, Arthur. Allow me to introduce my new Head of Corporate Forensic Security—Miss Cassidy Miller."

Vance turned his gaze onto Cassidy. He looked at her face, her eyes, her posture. A faint, nagging flicker of recognition passed through his mind, but he couldn't quite place her.

"Miss Miller," Vance said smoothly, taking her hand and kissing the air above her knuckles. "A pleasure. A young, beautiful woman in corporate security? Alessandro, you always did have an eye for non-traditional talent."

"I prefer talent that sees what others miss, Arthur," Alessandro replied casually.

Cassidy smiled—a smooth, razor-sharp smile that made Vance’s stomach tighten slightly.

"Mr. Vance," Cassidy spoke, her voice velvety and polished. "I was actually reviewing the Port Authority's historical audit records from 2019 this afternoon. Truly fascinating work. Especially the structural exemption reports regarding the East River terminals."

Vance’s eyes narrowed by a fraction of a millimeter. "2019? That was a long time ago, Miss Miller. Bureaucracy moves fast; old reports are just dusty paper."

"Not when the signatures on those reports match the routing slips of the Midtown Commercial Bank, Mr. Vance," Cassidy murmured softly, stepping half an inch closer, her voice lowered so only Vance and Alessandro could hear.

Vance’s face went dead pale. The champagne glass in his hand trembled slightly, a drop of golden liquid spilling over the rim onto his white cuff.

"What... what are you talking about?" Vance whispered, his polite facade shattering.

Alessandro leaned down, his voice a low, terrifying growl. "We know about the eight million dollars, Arthur. We know about Preston. We know about the fake EPA certificate."

Vance swallowed hard, looking around the crowded room frantically, realizing for the first time that four of Alessandro’s heavily built security guards in dark suits had subtly surrounded his position, cutting off his path to the exits.

"Alessandro... listen to me," Vance stammered, sweat breaking out under his collar. "It wasn't my idea! The Morettis... they threatened my family! They forced me to sign those filings!"

"You didn't look very forced when you took their eight million, Arthur," Cassidy interjected coldly, her hazel eyes cutting through him like glass. "And seven years ago, when you framed Thomas Miller to cover up the Moretti embezzlements... were you forced then too?"

Vance stared at Cassidy. The puzzle pieces in his mind finally clicked together.

May you like

"Miller..." Vance gasped, his eyes wide with horror. "You're... you're Thomas Miller’s daughter..."

"I am," Cassidy whispered, leaning into his ear. "And tonight, I am your auditor."
