Chapter 4 – “The Heir Who Lost Everything”

The first thing I learned after discovering the truth was that enemies did not always attack with weapons.
Sometimes they attacked with memories.
With doubts.
With carefully placed lies that made you question the people closest to you.
And sometimes…
they attacked with your own name.
By morning, the entire city knew something was wrong.
I woke up to dozens of missed calls.
Executives.
Lawyers.
Board members.
News agencies.
People who had spent years trying to reach me suddenly had my number.
That was never a good sign.
I walked into the living room.
Vanessa was still there.
She had not slept.
Neither had I.
The documents from her father’s old case remained scattered across the table.
The truth sat between us.
Fragile.
Dangerous.
Waiting to be destroyed.
“You should go,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“What?”
“You need to deal with your company.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Adrien.”
“No.”
She looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“Your company is in trouble because of me.”
I stepped closer.
“Don’t say that.”
“But it’s true.”
“No.”
My voice became sharper than I intended.
“This happened because someone wants us to believe it’s your fault.”
Vanessa looked down.
“That doesn’t change the fact that your family is paying the price.”
Before I could answer, my phone rang again.
This time, I recognized the number.
My assistant.
I answered.
“Tell me.”
Her voice was trembling.
“Mr. Cole…”
“What happened?”
“The board called an emergency meeting.”
“Why?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because of the investigation.”
My expression changed.
“What investigation?”
She swallowed.
“The financial authorities received evidence of illegal activity inside Cole Dominion Holdings.”
My blood turned cold.
“What kind of evidence?”
“Unauthorized transfers.”
I froze.
“How much?”
“Almost forty million dollars.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.”
I looked at her.
“They’re saying I did it?”
My assistant hesitated.
“No, sir.”
“Then who?”
Another pause.
And then:
“Your name is attached to the transactions.”
The boardroom had always been my battlefield.
I had entered that room hundreds of times.
Every chair.
Every screen.
Every person sitting around that table existed because my family built the company.
Usually, when I walked in, people stood.
Today, nobody moved.
That told me everything.
My father sat at the end of the table.
His expression was unreadable.
Beside him were the board members.
The same people who had celebrated my promotion.
The same people who had told me I represented the future.
Now they looked at me like I was a problem to solve.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Adrien.”
I sat down.
“What happened?”
No one answered.
Finally, one of the directors pushed a folder toward me.
“Evidence was submitted this morning.”
I opened it.
Bank records.
Transfer reports.
Authorization codes.
My signature.
My credentials.
Everything looked real.
Too real.
“This is fabricated.”
The chairman looked uncomfortable.
“We hope so.”
Hope.
That word was worse than accusation.
Because it meant they were not defending me.
They were waiting to see if I survived.
I looked at my father.
“Say something.”
He remained silent.
“Father.”
Finally, he spoke.
“You should have listened to me.”
The room became still.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I warned you.”
“You warned me about Vanessa.”
“Yes.”
“And now?”
His eyes hardened.
“Now I’m warning you about everyone.”
I felt anger rise.
“You knew something was happening.”
My father said nothing.
That silence was confirmation.
“You knew.”
“Adrien—”
“No.”
I stood.
“You knew Elliot was dangerous.”
The board members looked confused.
My father’s face changed slightly.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Then explain.”
No answer.
“Explain why Vanessa’s father was blamed for something Elliot did.”
The room froze.
My father looked at me.
Not angry.
Not surprised.
Afraid.
That was the first time in my life I saw fear on my father’s face.
And that scared me more than anything.
The meeting ended with my suspension.
Not officially.
Not yet.
But everyone understood.
The company I was supposed to inherit was now questioning whether I was fit to lead it.
The heir had become a liability.
By noon, the headlines appeared.
COLE DOMINION EXECUTIVE ACCUSED IN MAJOR FINANCIAL SCANDAL
IS ADRIEN COLE THE FALL OF THE EMPIRE?
FROM GOLDEN HEIR TO CORPORATE DISGRACE
I sat in my office staring at the screen.
My entire life had been built around reputation.
Now, in one morning, that reputation was collapsing.
Marcus stood nearby.
“This is coordinated.”
I looked at him.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the transfers started three days before your wedding.”
Three days.
The timing was not random.
Someone wanted maximum damage.
They wanted the company unstable.
They wanted the wedding destroyed.
They wanted Vanessa blamed.
And they wanted me alone.
“Find Elliot.”
Marcus nodded.
“We’re trying.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“Find him before my father does.”
That made Marcus pause.
“You think your father is involved?”
I looked toward the city.
“I think my father knows more than he admits.”
That evening, I found Vanessa at her mother’s house.
She opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
I didn’t answer.
She looked at my face.
Then she understood.
“The company.”
I nodded.
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Adrien…”
“Don’t.”
She stopped.
“Don’t blame yourself.”
“But—”
“Someone wants you to believe that.”
She looked confused.
“What?”
I stepped inside.
“They are using the same trick on both of us.”
“What trick?”
“Making us believe we are the reason everything is falling apart.”
Vanessa became quiet.
Then she whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
I looked at her.
“For what?”
“For bringing chaos into your life.”
I moved closer.
“You were already in my life.”
A tear formed in her eyes.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
She shook her head.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you everything…”
She looked away.
“You will hate your father.”
I froze.
The sentence carried more weight than anything else she had said.
“What did he do?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she walked to a drawer.
She removed another envelope.
Different from the first.
Older.
More damaged.
“My father left this for me.”
I took it.
“What is it?”
“His final letter.”
I opened it.
The handwriting was uneven.
A man writing while knowing he might never get justice.
I read the first line.
Vanessa, if you are reading this, it means I failed to expose the truth.
My heart tightened.
I continued.
I discovered that Richard Cole knew about the fraud.
My hands stopped.
Richard Cole.
My father.
He knew Elliot Grant was responsible. He knew my name was being destroyed. But he allowed it because protecting Cole Dominion mattered more than protecting an innocent man.
I looked up.
Vanessa was crying silently.
I looked back at the letter.
There was more.
I tried to make Richard choose between his empire and his conscience.
He chose the empire.
The room disappeared.
My father.
The man who taught me everything.
The man whose approval I spent my entire life chasing.
Had sacrificed another family.
For business.
For power.
For the company.
I lowered the letter.
Vanessa whispered:
“Now you know.”
I couldn’t speak.
Because part of me wanted to defend him.
Wanted to say there was another explanation.
Wanted to believe the man who raised me was not capable of this.
But another part of me…
knew.
The next morning, everything collapsed.
Not slowly.
Not gradually.
Completely.
The stock price dropped.
Investors withdrew.
Three major partners terminated contracts.
The board announced they would vote on removing my father as CEO.
And then came the final blow.
A video appeared online.
Security footage.
A man entering the company vault.
The person’s face was blurred.
But the clothing was clear.
The same coat.
The same build.
The same height.
The caption spread everywhere:
ADRlEN COLE STEALS COMPANY FUNDS BEFORE HIS WEDDING.
I stared at the screen.
It was impossible.
Because the person in the video…
looked like me.
Marcus turned pale.
“They’re using your disguise.”
My blood ran cold.
The homeless man.
The coat.
The fake identity.
Someone knew.
Someone had taken the one mistake I made…
and turned it into a weapon.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
I looked at her.
The world believed I had committed a crime.
My family believed she was dangerous.
The truth was buried beneath lies.
And the person behind it had planned everything perfectly.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Elliot Grant.
“Hello, Adrien.”
My grip tightened.
“Where are you?”
A quiet laugh.
“Somewhere safe.”
“You framed me.”
“No.”
His voice was calm.
“I revealed who you really are.”
My jaw tightened.
“What?”
“You think you’re different from your father.”
Silence.
“But you’re not.”
My anger rose.
“You destroyed innocent people.”
“No.”
He whispered:
“Your family did.”
Then he said the words that froze my blood.
“Ask Vanessa what happened the night your father bought her silence.”
The call ended.
I lowered the phone slowly.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Adrien…”
I stared at her.
Because suddenly there was one question I could no longer avoid.
Not about Elliot.
Not about my father.
About Vanessa.
“What happened that night?”
Her face went pale.
And for the first time…
she looked afraid of telling me.
“Adrien…”
“What did my father do?”
A long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“He saved me.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He saved my life.”
My heart stopped.
“But he destroyed my father’s.”
The truth was becoming darker.
More complicated.
More painful.
And somewhere between betrayal and forgiveness…
I had to find the answer.
Because before I could rebuild my company…
before I could save my name…
I had to discover whether the man who raised me was the villain…
or the man who had been protecting us from something even worse.
Nine days before my wedding…
I lost my fortune.
I lost my reputation.
I lost everything I thought defined me.
But somehow…
I still had one thing left.
May you like
The woman everyone told me not to trust.
And she was the only person still standing beside me.
