Chapter 3 – “The Truth Behind Vanessa Hart”

The envelope sat between us like a weapon.
Not because of what it contained.
Because of what it represented.
For years, I had believed my family built everything through intelligence, discipline, and sacrifice.
My father had always told me the same story.
Cole Dominion Holdings survived because we were smarter than everyone else.
Because we saw opportunities others missed.
Because we never let emotions interfere with business.
But now Vanessa was standing in front of me, telling me the one thing I never thought possible.
That my father had destroyed her family.
And worse…
That he knew the truth.
I stared at the envelope.
“Open it.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“What?”
“You brought it here because you want me to see it.”
Her lips parted.
For a moment, she looked like she wanted to take it back.
Like she regretted coming.
Then she slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
My fingers touched the envelope.
It was old.
The paper had softened from years of being handled.
A person did not hide something like this because it was meaningless.
A person hid something like this because it could change lives.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Emails.
Copies of contracts.
My eyes moved quickly.
Too quickly.
Because my brain refused to accept what I was seeing.
The first document was a financial report.
Westbridge Redevelopment Project.
Five years ago.
My family’s signature.
Richard Hart’s signature.
And beneath it…
A note.
CONFIDENTIAL REVIEW: INTERNAL FRAUD SUSPECTED.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?”
She sat down slowly.
“The truth.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“This doesn’t prove anything.”
“I know.”
Her voice was quiet.
“That’s why my father lost everything.”
I looked back at the documents.
“Explain.”
Vanessa folded her hands together.
“My father was blamed for leaking confidential information about the Westbridge project.”
“The leak cost Cole Dominion millions.”
“Yes.”
“So everyone thought he betrayed my family.”
She nodded.
“But he didn’t.”
I stared at the papers.
“Then who did?”
Vanessa looked away.
“Elliot Grant.”
The name again.
The man who had appeared from nowhere.
The man who had frightened her.
The man who seemed to know every weakness in her life.
“He worked for your father,” she continued.
“I know.”
“No, Adrien.”
Her eyes met mine.
“You know the title. You don’t know the person.”
That sentence hurt.
Because it sounded like something I needed to hear.
“Your father trusted Elliot more than anyone.”
I said nothing.
“Elliot had access to everything. Financial reports. Contracts. Internal communications.”
“And he framed your father?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because he wanted control.”
“Of what?”
“The entire company.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?”
I looked at her.
She pointed at the documents.
“Your father removed him six months after the investigation.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
I froze.
Because I had never asked.
My father had simply told me:
He made a mistake.
That was all.
“He discovered Elliot was stealing.”
Vanessa nodded.
“And what happened?”
“He was fired.”
“And the evidence?”
I stared.
“What evidence?”
“Exactly.”
The silence was uncomfortable.
Because suddenly I realized something.
My father had been unusually quiet about Elliot.
Too quiet.
I stood and walked toward the window.
Charlotte glittered below.
Millions of people.
Millions of stories.
And somewhere inside all that noise was the truth about my family.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Of what would happen after.”
I turned.
“What does that mean?”
She took a deep breath.
“When I met you, I didn’t know you were Adrien Cole.”
A painful smile appeared.
“You were just the man who helped me carry boxes when my mother moved houses.”
I remembered.
Three years ago.
A rainy afternoon.
A woman struggling with furniture outside an old house.
I had been there because a friend asked me to inspect a property.
I stayed because Vanessa looked exhausted.
I helped.
No cameras.
No business.
No reputation.
Just me.
“She loved that version of you,” Vanessa whispered.
“The version who didn’t have a last name that scared people.”
My chest tightened.
“But when I found out who you were…”
“You wanted to leave?”
She looked at me.
“No.”
That answer came immediately.
“I wanted to believe it didn’t matter.”
I stepped closer.
“Then why keep this from me?”
“Because your father’s name was everywhere.”
She touched the documents.
“My father died believing he destroyed his own family.”
I froze.
“He died?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He had a heart attack two years after losing everything.”
The room became heavier.
“Vanessa…”
“He spent his last months trying to prove he was innocent.”
Her voice cracked.
“And nobody believed him.”
I looked away.
I didn’t know what to say.
Because apologies were too small.
My father’s actions were not mine.
But his name was.
A sound came from outside.
A car door.
Vanessa immediately stiffened.
I noticed.
“Who is it?”
She looked toward the window.
“I don’t know.”
But she was lying.
I walked toward the curtains.
Below, on the street, a black sedan was parked.
The same one from earlier.
My blood ran cold.
“Elliot?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He follows me.”
“Why?”
“Because he wants this.”
She pointed to the envelope.
“What exactly is inside?”
She hesitated.
Then:
“The original files.”
“Original?”
“Yes.”
“The files proving Elliot manipulated the Westbridge deal.”
I looked at the papers.
“But why would your father have them?”
“He discovered the truth.”
“And?”
“He tried to bring it to your father.”
My stomach tightened.
“And my father ignored him?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
My phone rang.
Father.
I looked at the screen.
For a moment, neither Vanessa nor I moved.
Then she whispered:
“Don’t answer.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because if he knows I told you…”
The fear in her eyes stopped me.
I answered.
“Father.”
His voice came immediately.
“Adrien.”
Calm.
Controlled.
The voice of a man who had spent decades making people obey.
“I heard you had an unexpected visitor tonight.”
My blood froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“How did you know?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because I know everything that affects this family.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Did you investigate Vanessa Hart?”
Silence.
Only two seconds.
But two seconds were enough.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she was dangerous.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Pain crossed her face.
I felt anger rise.
“She was dangerous?”
“Yes.”
“Or was she a threat because she knew the truth?”
Another silence.
Longer.
My father’s voice became colder.
“Where did you hear that?”
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the envelope.
“From her.”
A deep breath came through the phone.
“Adrien.”
“What?”
“You need to understand something.”
“What?”
“People like the Harts survive by making themselves victims.”
I clenched my jaw.
“Is that what happened?”
“Yes.”
“Then prove it.”
Silence.
“Excuse me?”
“Prove she’s lying.”
My father didn’t respond.
And that told me everything.
Because my father always had an answer.
Always.
Except now.
“Adrien.”
His voice changed.
A warning.
“Walk away from this.”
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had risked everything to tell me the truth.
“No.”
The word surprised even me.
“Adrien.”
“I said no.”
My father became quiet.
Then he said:
“You have no idea what you’re involving yourself in.”
I ended the call.
Vanessa stared at me.
“You shouldn’t have done that.”
“Done what?”
“Chosen me against your family.”
I looked at her.
“I didn’t choose you against my family.”
I picked up the envelope.
“I chose the truth.”
For the first time that night…
Vanessa looked at me differently.
Not with fear.
Not with guilt.
With hope.
But before either of us could speak, my laptop suddenly turned on.
A notification appeared.
Marcus.
URGENT.
I opened the message.
One sentence.
And the world changed again.
Adrien, someone accessed your father’s private files tonight.
Another message followed.
The person who accessed them was Vanessa Hart.
I stared at the screen.
My heart sank.
Vanessa saw my expression.
“What happened?”
I turned the laptop toward her.
Her face went pale.
“No…”
“What?”
She stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because I never accessed anything.”
“Then who did?”
She looked at me.
And slowly…
fear returned to her eyes.
“Adrien…”
“What?”
Her voice shook.
“Someone is trying to make it look like I did.”
The room went silent.
Because suddenly the enemy was no longer hidden.
Someone was moving pieces on a chessboard.
Someone wanted me to distrust Vanessa.
Someone wanted us divided.
And they were willing to destroy both families to do it.
I looked at the envelope.
At the documents.
At Vanessa.
Then outside at the city that had always belonged to my family.
For the first time in my life…
I realized something terrifying.
Money could buy security.
Power could buy influence.
But neither could protect you from a person who knew exactly where to hurt you.
And whoever was behind this…
knew exactly where to hurt us.
Nine days before my wedding…
my future wife became the only person I trusted.
May you like
And somehow…
the person everyone else wanted me to destroy.
