Chapter 4 - The Shattered Empire

“GET DOWN!” Richard screamed, grabbing Emily by the waist and tackling her behind the heavy mahogany desk just as the breaching charge detonated.

BOOM!

The oak door disintegrated in a cloud of splinters and black smoke.

The heavy shockwave rattled the room, blowing out the remaining window panes. Before the smoke could clear, the lead mercenary stepped through the blown-out frame, his night-vision goggles glowing green in the haze, his weapon leveled.

“End of the line, Hawthorne—”

BANG! BANG!

Richard fired two precise rounds through the smoke.

The heavy hollow-point bullets struck the mercenary square in the center of his chest plate. The kinetic force drove the man backward out into the hallway, crashing against the far wall.

Richard jumped up to advance, but his gun clicked empty. Click. Click.

The second surviving mercenary rounded the broken doorway, leveling his assault rifle directly at Richard’s head. “Drop the gun, billionaire!”

Richard stood his ground, raising his hands slowly, stepping sideways to completely block the mercenary’s view of the wardrobe where the boys were hiding.

“Take me,” Richard said, his voice deadly calm. “I’m the target. I’m the one with the keys to the offshore accounts and the evidence against the Governor. Leave the woman and the children out of this.”

The mercenary sneered under his tactical mask. “The Governor said no witnesses, Mr. Hawthorne. Especially not the maid who signed the police statements.”

He shifted his aim past Richard’s shoulder, targeting Emily.

“NO!” Richard lunged forward blindly, throwing his body into the path of the weapon.

RAT-TAT!

Two suppressed shots echoed through the room.

Richard felt a blinding, white-hot fire tear through his right shoulder and upper ribs. The force of the impact spun him around, throwing him heavily onto the floor beside the ruined desk. Blood, hot and dark, instantly soaked through his white dress shirt.

“RICHARD!” Emily shrieked.

The mercenary stepped over Richard’s bleeding form, raising his rifle to execute him. “Pity. You could have bought your way out of anything else.”

Suddenly, bright, blinding white floodlights illuminated the entire estate from the outside through the shattered windows.

The roar of twin turbine engines rattled the roof as a massive Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter hovered directly over the mansion’s courtyard, its spotlight cutting through the storm rain like a divine blade.

“FBI! FREEZE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!” a deafening voice boomed from the helicopter’s external PA system.

Sirens—dozens of them—wailed down the estate driveway as heavy armored SWAT vehicles smashed through the outer iron gates.

The mercenary froze in terror, looking up at the ceiling as tactical glass-breakers shattered the upper skylights of the hallway.

“CLEAR THE ROOM! GO! GO! GO!” tactical officers roared as heavy flashbang grenades bounced into the corridor.

BANG-FLASH! BANG-FLASH!

Blinding light and disorienting sound filled the service hallway. The mercenary dropped his weapon, clutching his ears as three heavily armed FBI Hostage Rescue Team operators burst through the broken doorway, slamming him face-down into the carpet and securing his hands in flex-cuffs.

“ROOM CLEAR! WE HAVE SECURED THE HAWTHORNE RESIDENCE!” an operator shouted into his headset. “WE NEED MEDICALLY TRAINED PERSONNEL IN THE SERVICE WING IMMEDIATELY! PRIMARY TARGET IS DOWN WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS!”

The room descended into controlled chaos.

Emily didn't care about the heavily armed FBI agents or the spotlight blinding the room. She dropped to her knees beside Richard, her hands pressing down hard on his shoulder wound to stop the pumping blood.

“Richard! Stay with me! Look at me!” Emily cried out, her hands quickly becoming soaked in his warm blood. “Don't close your eyes!”

Richard lay on the carpet, his breathing shallow and rapid, his face grey. He looked up at Emily, his vision blurring around the edges, but he forced a weak, bloody smile.

“The... the boys...” Richard rasped, his hand trembling as he reached up to gently touch her cheek, leaving a faint streak of blood on her skin. “Are... are they safe?”

“They’re safe! They’re safe, Richard!” Emily sobbed, holding his hand against her face. “You saved them! You took a bullet for us!”

Ethan, Noah, and Liam peeked out from behind the heavy oak wardrobe. Seeing their father lying bleeding on the floor, the three boys forgot their fear and ran out, dropping to their knees beside him, crying hysterically.

“Daddy! Daddy!” Liam wailed, clutching Richard’s uninjured arm. “Don't go away! Please don't go away!”

Richard looked at his three sons, tears mixing with the sweat on his temples. “Daddy’s... not going anywhere, sweethearts... I promise...”

Two FBI paramedics rushed into the room carrying a heavy trauma kit and a folding stretcher.

“Step back, ma’am! We need to apply an emergency chest seal!” the paramedic ordered, unpacking trauma shears and sterile dressings.

Emily started to back away to give them room, but Richard’s bloody fingers tightened around her hand with surprising strength.

“Emily...” Richard whispered, his voice fading fast as the paramedics cut open his blood-soaked shirt. “Don't... don't leave Oakhaven... please...”

Emily looked down at the bleeding billionaire, then at the three boys who were clutching her skirts, refusing to let go.

“I won't leave,” Emily promised softly, her voice steady amidst the storm. “I’ll be right here when you wake up.”

Richard closed his eyes, his breathing stabilizing as the paramedic pressed an oxygen mask over his face and wheeled him out through the shattered halls of his grand estate into the waiting ambulance.
