Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid

The rain began at midnight, pouring over Silicon Valley in thick, torrential sheets.

Inside the Hawthorne mansion, the silence was eerie.

The sunroom had been cordoned off by estate maintenance, covered in heavy blue tarps to keep out the storm. Upstairs in the primary master suite, Richard sat at his grand mahogany desk, staring at three high-definition monitors.

The monitors were displaying live security footage from every angle of the estate.

On screen one, he watched the front gate, where two marked police cruisers were parked. Victoria Lane had been officially booked at the county jail four hours ago. Her father, Governor Lane, had already called Richard three times on his private line, threatening to destroy Hawthorne Enterprises' tax exemptions if Richard didn't drop the charges.

Richard had responded by blocking the Governor’s number and releasing the sunroom security footage directly to the District Attorney.

On screen two, Richard watched the main living room, where two private forensic accountants hired by his legal team were sifting through every financial transaction Victoria had executed over the last eighteen months. The initial report was staggering: she had embezzled over twelve million dollars from his personal charitable foundations, diverting funds into shell companies registered in Delaware.

On screen three, Richard watched the camera inside Emily’s small staff apartment.

The room was dimly lit by a soft nightlight.

The three boys were fast asleep on Emily’s modest bed, their bandaged limbs resting comfortably under the floral duvet. Emily was sitting in the small wooden armchair beside the bed, holding an open children’s book, her head resting against the wall, her eyes closed in exhaustion.

Richard leaned his foreheads against his hands.

He had spent his whole life calculating algorithms, predicting market trends, and conquering corporate rivals. He had believed he was invulnerable. But watching that small screen, he felt an overwhelming sense of emptiness.

Suddenly, a red warning light flashed across the top of screen one.

PERIMETER BREACH - WEST GATE.

Richard snapped his head up.

The security feed from the west service entrance flickered and died, replaced by static. A second later, screen two went black as well.

“What the hell?” Richard stood up instantly, tapping his desk intercom. “Security! Report! West gate sensor just went offline!”

Static buzzed over the intercom. No voice answered.

A cold surge of panic shot through Richard’s veins. He pulled his top desk drawer open, retrieved a matte-black Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, racked the slide, and stepped out into the dimly lit upper hallway.

The mansion was completely dark. The main power grid had been cut, and the emergency backup generators hadn't kicked in—which meant the electronic locks on the doors were either frozen or unlocked.

Downstairs, the heavy oak front doors burst open with a deafening crash.

Heavy, tactical boots slammed against the marble foyer.

Richard sprinted to the grand balcony overlooking the entrance hall, aiming his weapon down into the darkness.

Through the shadows, three tall men dressed in dark tactical gear, wearing ski masks, rushed into the foyer. They were carrying silenced submachine guns and heavy duffel bags.

“Clear the ground floor!” a harsh voice with a foreign accent commanded from the shadows. “Find the kids! The Governor wants the boys secured before the state police arrive! Move!”

Richard’s blood ran cold.

It wasn't a robbery. It was an armed abduction unit—hired by Governor Lane to kidnap the triplets, eliminate the evidence of Victoria’s crimes, and force Richard into a legal compromise!

“Target quadrant clear!” another mercenary yelled, kicking open the door to the primary dining room. “Check the staff quarters!”

Richard didn't hesitate. He raised his handgun and fired three rapid shots down into the foyer.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The bright muzzle flashes illuminated the grand hall. One mercenary dropped to the marble floor with a scream, clutching his shoulder.

“SNIPER ON THE BALCONY!” the lead mercenary roared, spraying a burst of automatic gunfire up toward the second floor.

RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!

Glass balustrades shattered into thousands of glistening pieces as Richard ducked behind a heavy marble pillar, plaster dust raining down on his hair.

“GET TO THE MAID’S QUARTERS! TAKE THE KIDS NOW!” the leader screamed.

“NO!” Richard bellowed.

Ignoring the tactical danger, Richard abandoned his defensive cover and sprinted down the back servants' staircase, his heart hammering like a war drum. He didn't care about his life, his money, or his empire—all he could see was the image of his three injured boys sleeping in Emily’s room.

Down in the narrow service hallway, darkness was total.

Richard rounded the corner just as a burly mercenary reached Emily’s door, raising his tactical boot to kick it off its hinges.

“GET AWAY FROM THAT DOOR!” Richard screamed, firing two shots point-blank.

The mercenary grunted as a bullet hit his tactical vest, staggering backward into the wall. He recovered quickly, raising his submachine gun to level it directly at Richard’s chest.

Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, the door to Emily’s quarters flew open.

Emily didn't scream. She didn't freeze.

She stepped out into the hall wielding a heavy, brass-bound antique floor mirror she had lifted from her room, slamming it with all her strength directly into the side of the mercenary’s head.

CRASH!

The heavy glass shattered in an explosion of mirror shards, knocking the heavy mercenary off balance.

“RICHARD! NOW!” Emily screamed.

Richard lunged forward, tackling the disoriented mercenary to the ground. They crashed onto the hallway floor, struggling violently over the submachine gun. Richard drove his elbow hard into the man’s throat, wrested the weapon from his hands, and struck him across the jaw with the heavy iron stock, knocking him unconscious.

Panting heavily, covered in sweat and plaster dust, Richard scrambled to his feet, pulling Emily back inside her room and slamming the heavy oak door shut, throwing the manual brass bolt into place.

Inside, the three boys were awake, huddled together on the bed, crying softly in the pitch-black room.

“Emily... are you hurt?!” Richard gasped, grabbing her shoulders in the dark, checking her arms frantically.

“I’m fine! I’m fine!” Emily panted, her eyes wide with adrenaline. “The boys are safe—I put them behind the heavy oak wardrobe!”

From the service hallway outside, heavy, deliberate footsteps approached.

The lead mercenary stopped right outside the locked oak door.

“Richard Hawthorne!” the voice sneered through the wood. “You’re out of options! The main security team outside is neutralized! Give us the boys and the Swiss documents, and you might live to see tomorrow!”

Richard looked down at his handgun. He had only three rounds left in the magazine.

He looked at Emily, who was standing defensively in front of the wardrobe where his sons were hiding. Her face was cut by a small stray piece of mirror glass, but her chin was held high, her posture unflinching.

In that terrifying, dark moment, as death knocked at the door, Richard saw everything clearly.

He had spent years looking for a partner among high-society elite, looking for status, beauty, and political power. Yet here, in a dark maid’s quarter, stood the only woman who possessed real power: absolute, selfless courage.

Richard stepped in front of Emily, leveling his gun at the door.

“Over my dead body,” Richard shouted back.

May you like

“Gladly,” the mercenary replied.

A heavy metallic click echoed outside as a breaching charge was slapped against the center of the wooden door.
