Chapter 7 - The Vault of Secrets

"There!" Dr. Thorne shouted, spotting the figures on the upper landing. "Bring them down! Use the dampener!"

One of the operatives raised a sleek, silver device—a directional bio-electric dampener designed to violently disrupt nerve signals. He pointed it directly at Clara.

As the device hummed to life, a high-pitched frequency tore through the air. Clara shrieked, collapsing against the banister as a wave of artificial paralysis shot through her spine. But before she could hit the ground, Eli threw himself over her, taking the brunt of the electromagnetic pulse.

Eli’s body convulsed violently. He gasped for air, his skin burning as the localized field overloaded his senses. Yet, instead of passing out, his unique physiology reacted like a lightning rod. The raw energy absorbed by his body discharged through his hands, shattering the glass lights along the staircase and sending a backward feedback loop straight into the operative's weapon.

BOOM!

The dampener exploded in the guard's hands, throwing the men back into the marble fountain below.

"Now! Into the vault!" Arthur screamed, charging out from the shadows, tackling the remaining guard into a display case, and grabbing Eli and Clara.

With Clara supported between Arthur and Eli, they rushed down the narrow service hallway behind the grand staircase, plunging into the subterranean depths of the manor. Arthur slammed his palm against the biometric scanner of the vault door just as Marcus’s voice echoed down the corridor: "You can't hide in there forever, Arthur! The board meeting starts in two hours. By noon, I own everything!"

The massive steel door sealed shut with a heavy hydraulic hiss, cutting off the noise of the estate.

Inside the climate-controlled vault, illuminated by blue emergency lights, Arthur dragged a heavy server rack out from the wall. Behind it lay a physical, air-gapped terminal—the original ledger of the Lower District project.

"He lied about everything," Arthur whispered, typing rapidly as line after line of encrypted code flashed across the screens. "The flood... it wasn't a natural disaster. Marcus and Thorne deliberately breached the dam to test an experimental bio-chemical dampener in the water supply. They poisoned thousands of poor families to simulate neurological paralysis, creating a synthetic epidemic so Aether Dynamics could sell the billion-dollar cure!"

Eli sat on the cold floor, his back resting against the wall, breathing heavily. "They tried to cure me. But my blood didn't change. It just made me feel the machines."

Clara crawled over to Eli, taking his bruised hand in hers. "You're not sick, Eli. You're the key."

Arthur turned from the screen, his face pale with horror. "It's worse than I thought. The board vote today isn't just a takeover. They are planning to roll out the bio-dampener nationwide through the commercial water systems, forcing millions into permanent dependence on their neural-tech link."
