Chapter 6 - The Ascent from darkness

The grand central chandelier flickered violently as Marcus overridden the estate’s power grid, plunging the marble foyer into an eerie, pulsing emergency red. Heavy thuds resounded against the front doors—Dr. Thorne’s operatives were using an industrial cutting torch, sparks showering against the reinforced glass.

"We have four minutes before they burn through the deadbolts," Arthur said, his eyes scanning the shadow-drenched balcony above. "Clara! Stay where you are, I'm coming to carry you!"

"No, Papa!" Clara’s voice rang out from the darkness of the second-floor landing. "There isn't time!"

Eli didn't wait. His bare feet made no sound as he leaped up the grand staircase two steps at a time. He reached Clara just as her knees buckled under the sheer strain of standing. Catching her beneath her arms, he absorbed her weight, bringing her gently against the banister.

"Look at me, Clara," Eli commanded, his voice eerily steady amid the deafening screech of melting steel below. He took both of her cold, trembling hands in his dirt-stained palms. "Forget the fire. Forget the metal. Do you remember the rain on the grass this morning?"

"I... I can't feel my heels, Eli," she sobbed, sweat plastering her dark hair to her forehead. "It hurts. It feels like burning ice."

"That's not pain. That's the life coming back," Eli whispered, staring deep into her eyes. A strange, subtle warmth seemed to radiate from his hands—a biological resonance born from years of surviving near the bio-electric waste dumped by Aether Dynamics in the Lower District. His body was an organic conductor, grounding the static suppression fields that Thorne’s technology used to keep victims paralyzed. "They locked your nerves with their machine. But machines break. You don't."

Below them, the heavy oak doors buckled with a deafening crash. Heavy footsteps echoed through the hall as four armored men, accompanied by Dr. Thorne and Marcus, stepped into the crimson-lit foyer.

"Find them," Marcus ordered coldly. "And if Arthur resists, use lethal force. We can frame it as an attack by the street boy."

"Clara," Eli breathed, his grip tightening. "Step."

Clara took a ragged breath, closed her eyes, and picture the ballroom floor. She pushed down—not with her muscles, but with her mind, forcing her nerve pathways to bridge the artificial gap.

Clack.

Her right slipper struck the first marble step.

Arthur, watching from the darkness near the basement access door, held his breath, tears streaming down his face. Step by step, completely unassisted except for the light touch of Eli’s hand, Clara descended the grand staircase in front of her mother’s killers.
