Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Library

Two weeks passed.

The court case was officially dismissed with prejudice. Vanessa Carter fled to Europe to avoid extortion charges, relinquishing all parental rights in exchange for William dropping the criminal investigation.

The Carter mansion was no longer a broken house.

Laughter filled the hallways. Leo, Mason, and Luke became inseparable, turning the vast backyard into a kingdom of dirt forts, toy battles, and outdoor games.

My role had shifted naturally. I was no longer treated as the hired cleaner. I had my own spacious suite in the family wing, my salary had been tripled, and William insisted that I sit beside him at every meal.

Yet, despite the peace, a new, heavy tension had begun to build inside the house—a tension that had nothing to do with threats or lawsuits, and everything to do with the man who owned the estate.

It was ten o'clock on a Friday evening. Leo was fast asleep in his room after a long day of playing tag with the twins.

I walked into the grand library on the second floor to return a stack of children's books to the shelves. The room was warm, lit by the glowing embers of the stone fireplace and a single brass reading lamp on the mahogany desk.

William sat in a high-backed leather chair, a glass of scotch resting untouched beside him. He wasn't working. He was simply staring into the fire, lost in deep thought.

"You should be sleeping," I said softly, stepping into the warm light.

William looked up. The moment his eyes met mine, the weary look on his face vanished, replaced by that intense, burning focus that always made my breath catch.

"I can't sleep, Maya," William said, standing up slowly and walking over to the fireplace where I stood. "Every time I close my eyes, I think about what this house was like three weeks ago. How quiet it was. How dead."

"It’s alive now," I said with a faint smile. "The boys are happy, William. They trust you."

"They trust us," William corrected, stopping just inches away from me. He reached out, his long fingers gently taking the books from my hands and setting them aside on the mantelpiece.

"Maya," he said softly, his voice dropping into a rich, intimate whisper. "When Vanessa brought up your past... your ex-husband... I saw the look in your eyes. I saw how much you were holding back."

I looked down at the carpet, feeling a faint blush creep up my neck. "I was embarrassed, William. I wanted you to see me as someone strong, not someone who got broken by a bad man."

William reached out, his thumb gently catching my chin and raising my face until I had no choice but to look into his eyes.

"Listen to me," William said, his thumb brushing softly across my cheekbone. "A woman who survives that kind of betrayal, who picks up the pieces for her son, who walks into a hostile house and heals two broken boys... that is the strongest woman I have ever met."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "William..."

"I don't want you to be my employee anymore, Maya," William whispered, his blue eyes searching my face with overwhelming tenderness.

"What are you saying?" I breathed.

"I'm saying I'm falling in love with you," William said, his broad hand moving to cradle the back of my neck, his fingers tangling in my hair. "And I think you feel it too."

Before I could answer, his lips met mine.

The kiss was slow, deep, and electric—a sudden release of weeks of hidden glances, shared smiles, and unspoken devotion. I let out a soft sigh, my hands instinctively reaching up to clutch the front of his shirt, pulling him closer as the warmth of the fireplace wrapped around us.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, both of us were breathing heavily.

"Dad?"

A small voice called from the dark doorway of the library.

We parted quickly, turning toward the door.

Mason stood there in his blue pajamas, holding his stuffed bear, looking at us with wide, curious eyes.

"Mason?" William asked, his voice slightly breathless. "Is everything okay?"

Mason looked at his father, then at me, noting my flushed cheeks and William's arm still wrapped protectively around my waist.

May you like

A slow, brilliant grin spread across the seven-year-old's face.

"Are you two finally boyfriend and girlfriend?" Mason asked. "Because Luke owes me ten dollars."
