Chapter 3 - The Intruders

William reacted instantly, pushing me behind him as he reached for the intercom on the kitchen wall.

"Security, status!" William commanded into the receiver.

Static hissed back, followed by a frantic voice: "Mr. Carter, a vehicle just rammed the front security gate! It’s Mrs. Carter!"

Before William could even move toward the foyer, the front double doors were pushed open with a thunderous bang.

High heels clicked sharply against the marble floor. A woman in an ivory mink coat, with bleach-blonde hair and oversized sunglasses, marched into the house, flanked by two burly men in dark suits and a high-profile attorney carrying a leather briefcase.

Vanessa Carter had arrived.

"William!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice dripping with artificial drama as she swept her sunglasses off her face. "Where are my babies? Where are my poor, neglected boys?"

Evelyn Reed walked out of the guest room on the first floor, her binder clutched to her chest, her eyes wide with shock. "Mrs. Carter? What is the meaning of this disruption? The court evaluation is currently underway!"

"That's precisely why I'm here, Ms. Reed!" Vanessa declared, stepping toward Evelyn with a theatrical hand over her heart. "I received an anonymous tip that my ex-husband has brought an unqualified, low-class woman into this house, allowing her and her bastard child to endanger my sons!"

Vanessa’s cold, cruel eyes snapped toward me standing in the kitchen doorway.

"Look at her," Vanessa sneered, pointing a diamond-encrusted finger at my simple jeans and sweater. "A common maid sleeping in my boys' home! William, have you lost your mind? Is this who you have raising the Carter heirs?"

"Watch your mouth, Vanessa," William said, his voice dropping into a register so dangerously low that even her two hired security guards stepped back half an inch. "Maya has done more for our sons in six days than you have in three years."

"She's a gold-digger!" Vanessa spat. "I ran her background, William! Her name is Maya Lin. Her ex-husband went to prison for fraud, and she filed for bankruptcy eighteen months ago! She's a desperate woman using her child to worm her way into your estate!"

The room went dead silent.

I felt the blood drain completely from my face. My past—the humiliation of my ex-husband’s crimes, the financial ruin he dragged me through, the nights I cried myself to sleep wondering how I would buy milk for Leo—was suddenly laid bare on the marble floor for everyone to see.

Evelyn Reed frowned deeply, turning her sharp gaze toward me. "Is this true, Ms. Lin? Do you have a bankruptcy record involving financial fraud?"

"My ex-husband took out loans in my name without my knowledge," I managed to say, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to stay strong. "I filed for bankruptcy to protect my son. I have never committed a crime in my life."

"She’s a liability!" Vanessa shrieked, turning to Evelyn. "Ms. Reed, as a court officer, you cannot allow my sons to stay in this house for one more night under the care of a bankrupt fraud! I am taking them with me right now!"

"Touch them, and you won't leave this property alive," William growled, stepping directly between Vanessa and the staircase.

"Stop it! All of you!"

A small, clear voice echoed from the top landing.

Mason stood at the railing, holding Leo’s hand. Beside them, Luke held his tablet in his hands, his face pale but resolute.

"Mason, sweetie, come to Mommy!" Vanessa cooed, opening her arms with a fake smile. "Mommy is taking you away from this awful place!"

Mason didn't move. He looked down at his mother with a coldness that belonged to an adult.

"You called us every six months," Mason said, his voice echoing in the grand foyer. "And every time you called, you asked if Dad was paying your allowance on time. You never asked about my soccer games. You never asked why Luke stopped talking."

"Mason, darling, that's not—"

"I have the audio files," Luke interrupted softly, holding up his tablet.

Everyone froze.

Luke tapped the screen. A crystal-clear audio recording began to play over the mansion's integrated speaker system—a recording of a phone call from three nights ago between Vanessa and her attorney.

“...I don't care about the boys, Arthur!” Vanessa’s voice blared through the foyer, loud and unmistakable. “Just get the emergency custody order signed! Once I have physical possession of them, William will agree to any settlement to get them back. I want thirty million, or he’ll never see those twins again!”
