Chapter 7 - THE UNRAVELING

Chloe’s face drained of color so fast it was as if someone had pulled a plug beneath her skin.
"Camille, not now," Chloe hissed, trying to pull her wife toward the house where the cocktail reception was waiting. "Let’s go take the photos."
"No, wait," Camille said, letting go of Chloe’s hand. She stepped out of the aisle, walking right up to where Olivia and I were standing.
Camille knelt down in her immaculate white tuxedo, getting right down to Olivia’s eye level.
"Hello, little one," Camille said softly, her French accent thick and warm. "I am Camille. I am your new auntie."
Olivia looked at her, then up at me for permission. I offered a tiny nod.
"Hello," Olivia said softly. "You have a pretty suit."
Camille’s eyes welled with sudden, genuine tears. She looked up at me, her face pale with profound embarrassment.
"Clara," Camille said, her voice shaking. "Chloe told me... she told my whole family... that Olivia was unwell and that you had asked for a babysitter so you could relax today. She told me you didn't want her here because she was too tired from the trip."
The final piece of the puzzle fell into place with a terrifying, crystal-clear click.
Chloe hadn't just excluded my daughter. She had lied to her own wife to do it.
She had built a completely fake narrative to ensure Camille—who loved children and had spent months asking why my daughter wasn't involved in the wedding party—wouldn't question why her new niece was missing from the front row.
"That wasn't true, Camille," I said quietly, looking down at my sister, who was standing frozen five feet away. "I was told Olivia wasn't allowed at the ceremony. I was asked to hand her to a stranger down the lane."
"Chloe?" Camille stood up slowly, turning to face her new wife. Her voice was no longer soft; it was terrifyingly cold. "Is this true?"
"Camille, please, it's our wedding day!" Chloe panicked, looking around frantically as guests began drifting toward the cocktail tables on the lawn, watching the scene unfold from a distance. "She's twisting it! She’s trying to make a scene because of her divorce!"
"Do not speak about her divorce!" Camille snapped, her voice cutting through the garden air like a whip. "You lied to me! You lied to my parents! My mother asked you three times last night why Clara's child wasn't at the dinner, and you said she had a fever!"
My mother hurried up the path, holding her emerald dress off the grass. "Girls! Girls, please! The photographer is waiting by the hydrangeas! Everyone is looking!"
"Let them look, Diane!" Camille turned on my mother, her eyes blazing with absolute fury. "Did you know about this? Did you know she banned her own niece from the ceremony?"
My mother froze, her eyes darting nervously toward the gathering crowd of guests. "Camille, darling, it was just about keeping the ceremony quiet... you saw how Toby was..."
"Toby was crying in the front row!" Camille shouted, throwing her hands in the air. "And this little girl was sitting in the back row like an angel! You people are unbelievable! You are completely unbelievable!"
Camille turned back to me, her eyes filled with deep, sincere shame.
"Clara," Camille said, taking both of my hands in hers. "I am so, so sorry. Please. You and Olivia are coming to the barn for dinner. You will sit at the head table with my family. If anyone has a problem with that, I will leave my own reception."
Chloe gasped. "Camille! You can't be serious!"
May you like
Camille looked at her wife with a coldness that made my blood run chill. "I have never been more serious in my life, Chloe. You have ten minutes to fix your face for the photos. And then we are going to have a very long conversation about honesty."
Camille reached down, gently touched Olivia’s cheek with a soft smile, turned on her heel, and walked briskly toward the stone house alone.
