Chapter 7 - The Legal Siege

On Tuesday morning, I sat in the executive conference room on the forty-second floor of the Latham & Watkins building downtown. The view showed the entire city skyline, bathed in bright, crisp morning light.
Evelyn Vance sat across from me, alongside two senior litigation specialists and a former federal prosecutor named Thomas Miller, whom I had retained specifically to handle the criminal aspects of the incident.
"Sarah," Evelyn began, opening a tabbed legal binder. "Here is the current status. The public backlash against your family has created an unprecedented level of leverage for us. However, we need to decide on our operational speed."
"No mercy, Evelyn," I said, my voice smooth and unhurried. I took a sip of herbal tea, my burned skin feeling vastly better thanks to the medical treatment I’d received on Sunday. "I want every legal instrument executed simultaneously."
Thomas Miller nodded, pulling a set of draft complaints toward himself.
"We have filed three separate actions," Thomas explained. "First, a civil lawsuit in State Superior Court alleging Assault, Battery, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress, and Conspiracy to Defame. We are suing Beatrice, Caleb, and Maya jointly for fifty million dollars in damages."
"Fifty million?" I asked with a slight eyebrow raise. "They don't have fifty thousand."
"That’s the point," Thomas smiled grimly. "A judgment of that magnitude guarantees complete bankruptcy. It ensures that any future earnings, assets, or inheritance they might ever touch will be immediately garnished to satisfy the debt. They will never own property, cars, or bank accounts in their own names for the rest of their lives."
"What about the criminal charges?" I asked.
"The District Attorney’s office reviewed the high-definition video Caleb uploaded," Thomas stated. "Because the coffee was hot enough to cause second-degree burns—which we documented with the hospital report from Sunday afternoon—the charge against Beatrice is being elevated to Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Intentional Child/Dependent Abuse. For Caleb and Maya, they are being charged as co-conspirators to felony assault and misdemeanor stalking."
"When will the warrants be issued?"
Thomas checked his watch. "The judge signed the arrest warrants one hour ago. The local precinct is coordinating execution as we speak."
Just as Thomas finished his sentence, Evelyn’s assistant knocked softly on the conference room door and stepped in, holding an iPad.
"Ms. Sterling," the assistant said, turning the screen toward me. "Your family is downstairs in the lobby."
I looked at the live security camera feed from the building’s ground floor.
There they were. Beatrice, Caleb, and Maya.
They looked utterly disheveled. Beatrice’s hair was messy, her designer coat wrinkled. Caleb was wearing a faded polo shirt, looking pale and sweating profusely. Maya was hiding behind dark sunglasses, clutching an old handbag. They were arguing frantically with the three muscular security guards blocking the elevator bank.
"Should I have security throw them out into the street?" Evelyn asked, reaching for her desk phone.
"No," I replied, standing up and smoothing down the lapels of my fresh cream-colored silk blazer. "Let them up."
May you like
Evelyn looked surprised. "Sarah, you don't need to speak to them."
"I don't need to," I smiled softly, looking out at the city skyline. "I want to."
