CHAPTER 4 – THE WAR INSIDE THE CASTELLI EMPIRE

Dominic Castelli had fought many wars.
Some were fought with weapons.
Some with money.
Some with silence.
But the most dangerous wars were always fought inside a person.
Because an enemy outside could be defeated.
An enemy inside could destroy everything.
And for the first time in years, Dominic felt something he hated.
Doubt.
Not about Bradley Hayes.
Not about the truth.
About himself.
Because Alice Fitzgerald had become something he never expected.
A reminder.
A reminder that behind every empire he had built…
There was still a man who wanted to believe he could do something good.
Bradley Hayes sat alone after Dominic left.
The office was exactly the same.
The expensive furniture.
The glass walls.
The view of Chicago.
Everything looked unchanged.
But Bradley felt different.
Because for the first time, someone had walked into his world and refused to be impressed.
Most men reacted to Bradley’s reputation.
They became careful.
They became polite.
They became afraid.
Dominic Castelli had done none of those things.
He had simply looked at him.
And somehow, that was worse.
Bradley opened the file Dominic left behind.
The documents were real.
Too real.
Bank transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Names of companies Bradley thought were invisible.
Evidence that could destroy him.
But one thing bothered him more than everything else.
Dominic had not threatened him.
He had not shouted.
He had not demanded money.
He had simply given him a choice.
Tell the truth.
Or lose everything.
Bradley hated that.
Because men like Dominic were dangerous precisely because they did not need to prove their power.
They already had it.
“Mr. Hayes?”
Bradley looked up.
His assistant stood in the doorway.
“Yes?”
“Your father is calling.”
Bradley froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
A strange feeling moved through him.
His father rarely called.
Not unless something serious happened.
“Put him through.”
The phone connected.
A rough older voice answered.
“You met Castelli.”
Bradley said nothing.
“How did you know?”
A bitter laugh.
“Because when Dominic Castelli enters a room, people talk.”
Bradley looked out the window.
“He knows.”
Silence.
Then:
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Another pause.
“You need to fix this.”
Bradley clenched his jaw.
“I know.”
“No.”
His father’s voice hardened.
“You don’t understand.”
“What don’t I understand?”
“You are dealing with the wrong man.”
Bradley frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“You think Dominic Castelli is dangerous because of his reputation.”
A pause.
“You are wrong.”
Bradley waited.
“He is dangerous because he still believes he can be better than his father.”
Bradley’s expression changed.
“What are you talking about?”
But the call ended.
Meanwhile, Alice Fitzgerald was discovering something equally frightening.
The truth.
Because lies hurt.
But truth changed everything.
She sat in Dominic’s private library.
The room was quiet.
Too quiet.
She had never imagined herself sitting in a place like this.
A mansion.
A room full of expensive books.
A man everyone feared.
And yet…
Dominic was not what she expected.
That confused her.
She expected arrogance.
Coldness.
Cruelty.
Instead, she found someone who listened.
Someone who waited.
Someone who asked questions before making decisions.
“Why are you helping me?”
Dominic looked up from the documents.
The question had been coming.
He knew that.
“Because you need help.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No?”
Alice shook her head.
“People don’t risk everything for strangers.”
Dominic studied her.
“You think that’s what I’m doing?”
“What else would it be?”
Silence.
Then Dominic answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
Alice looked surprised.
A man like Dominic Castelli admitting uncertainty was unexpected.
He continued.
“But I know something.”
“What?”
“You looked afraid.”
Alice lowered her eyes.
“That happens.”
“To you?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Dominic’s expression darkened.
“And it shouldn’t.”
Something about those words broke through her defenses.
Because Bradley had spent years telling her fear was normal.
That every woman had to accept certain things.
That love came with sacrifice.
But Dominic said it differently.
Fear was not normal.
Fear was a warning.
The next day, the first attack came.
Not physical.
Not yet.
Bradley was smarter than that.
He attacked Alice’s reputation.
By noon, anonymous rumors appeared online.
Articles questioning her character.
Posts suggesting she had manipulated Bradley.
Whispers that she was unstable.
A woman trying to destroy a successful businessman.
The oldest weapon in the world.
Discredit the victim.
Protect the powerful.
Alice watched the comments appear one after another.
Her hands shook.
“What if everyone believes him?”
Dominic stood beside her.
“They won’t.”
“How do you know?”
“Because lies have limits.”
She looked at him.
“And truth?”
“Truth survives.”
Alice smiled sadly.
“You really believe that?”
Dominic looked at her.
“I have to.”
But while Dominic protected Alice publicly…
His own empire began to crack.
The Castelli family was not united.
It never had been.
Power attracted loyalty.
But it also attracted ambition.
And some people inside Dominic’s organization believed he had become weak.
Especially after protecting Alice.
Especially after refusing to destroy Bradley immediately.
Inside an underground meeting room, several senior members sat silently.
At the head of the table was Luca Castelli.
Dominic’s younger cousin.
A man who had spent years waiting.
Waiting for Dominic to make a mistake.
“You’re risking the family.”
Luca spoke calmly.
Dominic looked at him.
“Explain.”
“You are distracted.”
“By what?”
“A woman.”
The room became silent.
Dominic’s eyes hardened.
“Choose your next words carefully.”
Luca smiled.
“You built an empire by understanding weakness.”
He leaned forward.
“And now you have one.”
Silas immediately moved.
But Dominic raised a hand.
Stopping him.
Because Luca was not wrong about one thing.
Alice was changing him.
The question was whether that was a weakness.
Or whether it was the first sign he was becoming human again.
That night, Dominic found Alice sitting outside near the lake.
She was wrapped in a blanket.
Looking at the water.
“You should be inside.”
She looked up.
“You always give orders?”
“Usually.”
“And people listen?”
“Yes.”
She smiled slightly.
“I can see why.”
Dominic sat beside her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Alice asked:
“Are you dangerous?”
The question was direct.
Most people avoided asking.
Dominic appreciated that.
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
The answer surprised her.
“You admit it?”
“I don’t lie.”
“Even when the truth makes you look bad?”
“Especially then.”
The wind moved through the trees.
Alice looked away.
“Bradley used to be different.”
Dominic listened.
“He used to make me feel like I was the only person in the world.”
A sad smile appeared.
“Do you know what the worst part is?”
“What?”
“I still remember that version of him.”
Dominic understood.
Because that was how manipulation worked.
People did not fall in love with monsters.
They fell in love with the person before the monster appeared.
“He convinced me I was lucky.”
Dominic’s voice was quiet.
“You were not lucky.”
Alice looked at him.
“No?”
“No.”
A pause.
“You were surviving.”
Those words hit her harder than she expected.
Because someone finally understood.
Later that night, Marco arrived with new information.
Dominic knew immediately something was wrong.
“What happened?”
Marco placed a folder down.
“Bradley’s next move.”
Dominic opened it.
Inside was a court filing.
A custody petition.
A legal attack.
Alice’s face changed when she saw it.
“He’s trying to take everything.”
Marco nodded.
“He plans to claim emotional instability.”
Alice whispered:
“He wants to destroy me.”
Dominic looked at the papers.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“He wants to control you.”
A pause.
“But he made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Dominic closed the folder.
“He showed us exactly how afraid he is.”
At midnight, Bradley received a visitor.
Not Dominic.
Someone else.
Someone from his past.
The man entered his office without knocking.
Bradley looked up.
“You’re late.”
The stranger removed his coat.
“You’re losing control.”
Bradley frowned.
“I’m handling it.”
“No.”
The man walked closer.
“You’re panicking.”
Bradley’s face hardened.
“Careful.”
The stranger smiled.
“You always were like this.”
“Like what?”
“Thinking money made you powerful.”
A pause.
“But money only protects you until someone richer arrives.”
Bradley stood.
“What do you want?”
The man placed a photograph on the desk.
Bradley looked down.
It was Alice.
With Dominic.
Together.
His expression changed.
“No.”
The stranger smiled.
“Yes.”
“She’s becoming his weakness.”
Bradley stared at the photo.
Then slowly smiled.
Because finally…
He understood.
Dominic Castelli was not protecting Alice because of business.
He cared.
And that meant Dominic had something to lose.
The next morning, Dominic received the message.
A threat.
Simple.
Clear.
Leave Alice Fitzgerald alone.
Or she dies.
Silas read it.
His face became serious.
“Bradley?”
Dominic looked at the message.
“No.”
“Then who?”
Dominic stared toward the city.
Toward all the enemies he had made.
Toward all the secrets coming back.
“The past.”
Silas understood.
“Your father’s secrets.”
Dominic nodded.
And for the first time…
The war was no longer about Bradley Hayes.
It was about something much bigger.
Something that could destroy the Castelli family from within.
Dominic looked at Alice through the window.
She was standing in the garden.
A woman who had entered his life unexpectedly.
A woman who had reminded him he was still capable of caring.
And now…
Someone wanted to use her against him.
Dominic made a decision.
One that would change everything.
He would not run from his past.
He would not hide from his enemies.
And he would not let Alice become another person he failed to protect.
Because years ago, Dominic Castelli lost everything trying to survive.
May you like
But now…
He had finally found something worth fighting for.
