Chapter 11 - The Memorial under the Stars

To celebrate Chloé’s tenth birthday and the upcoming arrival of the new baby, the family gathered on the beach at night for a small bonfire.

Élise’s parents sat on a blanket, drinking cider, watching Thomas help the girls roast marshmallows over the flames. The sky above Brittany was perfectly clear, an infinite canvas of twinkling stars and silver moonlight.

Chloé walked over to Élise, carrying two small, biodegradable paper lanterns she had made herself. Written on them in her neat, childish handwriting were the names: Léo and Gabriel.

"Mommy," Chloé said, her eyes bright and mature beyond her years. "Can we send them up tonight? To tell them about their new sister?"

Élise felt a tear slip down her cheek, but it was a tear of pure peace. "Yes, sweetheart. Let's do it."

Thomas helped them light the small candles inside the lanterns. Together—Élise, Thomas, Chloé, and Sarah—they held the paper structures until the warm air filled them, making them light and buoyant.

They released them at the same time. The two lanterns rose slowly into the night air, drifting away from the coast, floating higher and higher toward the stars until they looked like two new constellations shining down upon the ocean.

Élise rested her head against Thomas’s chest, her hand holding Chloé’s tightly. She looked up at the two glowing lights in the sky. She had survived the worst storm a mother could face, she had broken the chains of a toxic family, and she had built a sanctuary of love from the ashes.

The children were safe in heaven, but they were no longer a weapon used to hurt her. They were her guardians, watching over a mother who had fought for them until the very end, and who was finally, beautifully, at peace.
