CHAPTER 5 – THE WAR FOR THE WHITMORE LEGACY

The name Damian Blackwood had not been spoken inside Whitmore Tower for twenty years.

Not publicly.

Not privately.

Not even among the oldest executives who had worked beside Edward Whitmore.

Because some names were not forgotten.

They were buried.

Alexander stared at the screen displaying Damian’s acquisition offer.

A man who had vanished from the business world.

A man who had been described as ruthless, brilliant, and dangerous.

A man his father had once called his greatest enemy.

And now he wanted Whitmore Systems.

Not a small investment.

Not a partnership.

The entire company.

Alexander’s company.

His father’s legacy.

His family’s future.

“No.”

The word came quietly.

But it carried certainty.

Daniel looked at him.

“You know him.”

Alexander nodded.

“From when I was a child.”

He looked at the screen.

“My father never said his name.”

“Why?”

Alexander’s expression darkened.

“Because whenever Damian Blackwood was mentioned…”

He paused.

“My father looked afraid.”

The investigation into Whitmore Systems continued through the night.

Daniel and a team of private investigators worked through thousands of documents.

Every financial record.

Every hidden account.

Every connection between Edward Whitmore and Damian Blackwood.

And slowly…

The pattern appeared.

A war.

Not a business competition.

A war.

Twenty-five years earlier, Edward Whitmore and Damian Blackwood had been partners.

Two brilliant men.

Two ambitious men.

Together, they created the foundation for what would eventually become two competing empires.

But something happened.

Something that destroyed their partnership.

And created a hatred that lasted decades.

“What happened between them?” Alexander asked.

Daniel looked at the files.

“We don’t know everything.”

“Find out.”

“There’s one missing piece.”

Alexander looked up.

“What?”

Daniel placed an old newspaper article on the table.

A headline from twenty-five years ago.

BLACKWOOD TECHNOLOGIES FOUNDER DIES IN MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Alexander frowned.

“Founder?”

Daniel nodded.

“Damian’s older brother.”

He continued.

“After his brother’s death, Damian blamed Edward Whitmore.”

Alexander stared at the article.

“But why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Damian believed Edward was responsible.”

The room went silent.

Alexander thought about his father.

Edward Whitmore.

A man who controlled everything.

A man who always had secrets.

A man who taught him that enemies were necessary.

But never told him why.

That evening, Alexander went back to Maya’s apartment.

This time, Noah and Lily were there.

The atmosphere was different.

Still awkward.

Still fragile.

But different.

They were no longer strangers.

Not yet a family.

But something between.

Alexander stood at the doorway.

Noah looked surprised.

“You’re here again.”

Alexander smiled slightly.

“I’m trying something new.”

“What?”

“Showing up.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Lily looked at him.

“Mom said you found something.”

Alexander nodded.

“About my father.”

The twins exchanged a glance.

Maya sat quietly.

She knew this conversation had to happen.

Alexander took a seat.

“I spent my whole life believing my father was a difficult man.”

A pause.

“But I thought he loved me.”

Noah listened carefully.

“And now?”

Alexander looked down.

“Now I think he loved me in the only way he understood.”

Lily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he protected me.”

A pause.

“But he also hurt me.”

The twins were silent.

“Your grandfather believed power was the only thing that could keep a family safe.”

Alexander looked at them.

“He was wrong.”

Noah asked:

“Why?”

“Because a family doesn’t survive because someone is powerful.”

Alexander’s voice softened.

“It survives because someone stays.”

The words affected them.

Because that was the thing they had wanted most.

Not money.

Not a mansion.

Not a billionaire father.

Just someone who stayed.

Later that night, Maya finally told Alexander everything.

The part she had hidden.

The part she had been afraid to reveal.

“The night your father came to see me…”

She paused.

“He wasn’t only trying to separate us.”

Alexander listened.

“He was trying to protect you from Damian.”

Alexander frowned.

“What?”

Maya nodded.

“Edward knew Damian was dangerous.”

“How?”

“Because Damian knew about something.”

“What?”

Maya looked at him.

“Your mother.”

The room became silent.

Alexander felt the same pain he had felt when he watched the video.

“My mother.”

Maya nodded.

“Your mother discovered something.”

“What?”

“She found financial records.”

Alexander leaned forward.

“What kind of records?”

“Records showing Damian and Edward had been involved in illegal activities before Whitmore Systems existed.”

Alexander stared.

His father.

The man who taught him ethics.

The man who built a public image of success.

Had secrets buried beneath it.

“She wanted to expose them.”

Maya continued.

“But before she could…”

Alexander finished the sentence.

“She died.”

Maya looked down.

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

“My father killed my mother?”

“No.”

Maya answered immediately.

“Your father was many things.”

A pause.

“But I don’t believe he killed her.”

Alexander looked confused.

“Then why hide the truth?”

“Because he was afraid.”

“Of Damian?”

Maya nodded.

“He knew Damian would destroy anyone who threatened him.”

Alexander stood.

“So my father spent fifteen years hiding everything?”

“Yes.”

“Even from me?”

Maya looked at him.

“Especially from you.”

The next morning, Damian Blackwood made his first public appearance in years.

Every major news channel covered it.

He stood outside the Blackwood headquarters.

Older than Alexander remembered.

Silver hair.

Cold eyes.

A man who looked like he had never lost a battle.

“I have great respect for Edward Whitmore.”

The statement surprised everyone.

“He was a brilliant man.”

A pause.

“But brilliance does not erase mistakes.”

The reporters moved closer.

“Are you referring to Alexander Whitmore?”

Damian smiled.

“I am referring to the truth.”

Then he delivered the attack.

“Whitmore Systems was built on stolen technology.”

The world exploded.

Within minutes, the accusations spread.

Investors panicked again.

The board demanded answers.

Alexander watched the broadcast.

Daniel stood beside him.

“He’s attacking the foundation.”

Alexander nodded.

“He wants everyone to believe my company is illegitimate.”

“Is it true?”

Alexander looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“But my father may have taken something.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“The truth.”

That afternoon, Alexander called a press conference.

Everyone expected a defense.

An attack.

A legal response.

Instead, Alexander did something nobody expected.

He admitted the truth.

“I made mistakes.”

The room went silent.

“I failed people I loved.”

Reporters watched closely.

“My children deserved a father who was present.”

A pause.

“But today I am not here to talk about my personal failures.”

Behind him appeared documents.

“Today I am here because someone is trying to destroy thousands of employees based on lies.”

The screen changed.

Damian’s accusations.

Financial records.

Old contracts.

Evidence.

Alexander continued:

“Whitmore Systems was not built by one man.”

He looked directly at the cameras.

“It was built by thousands of people who believed in something.”

Then he revealed the information nobody expected.

“Damian Blackwood has been hiding his own involvement in the creation of this company.”

Shock spread through the room.

Because Alexander was no longer defending himself.

He was attacking.

That night, someone broke into Maya’s apartment.

Fortunately, Noah and Lily were not home.

But Maya was.

When Alexander arrived, he found police outside.

His heart stopped.

“Maya!”

She turned.

Alive.

But terrified.

Alexander rushed toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Then she handed him something.

A small envelope.

“They left this.”

Alexander opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

His mother.

Standing beside Damian Blackwood.

And Edward Whitmore.

All three together.

On the back were six words:

YOUR FAMILY HAS ALWAYS BEEN LYING.

Alexander stared.

Because this was impossible.

His mother had supposedly never met Damian.

His father hated Damian.

Yet here they were.

Together.

The past was changing.

The truth was becoming darker.

Then Noah entered the room.

“Dad?”

Alexander turned.

The teenager looked at the photograph.

His expression changed.

“Who is that?”

Alexander looked at him.

“I don’t know anymore.”

And for the first time…

The billionaire CEO who had built an empire admitted something terrifying.

He had no idea who his family really was.

That night, another message arrived.

Not from Damian.

Not from Richard.

From an unknown sender.

A video file.

Alexander opened it.

The screen showed Edward Whitmore.

But this time…

He was crying.

Alexander froze.

Because he had never seen his father cry.

Edward looked into the camera.

“If Alexander is watching this…”

He swallowed.

“I need him to understand.”

A pause.

“I was not trying to destroy your family.”

The old man looked broken.

“I was trying to save it.”

Then he said the words that changed everything:

“The person you should fear is not Damian Blackwood.”

Alexander leaned closer.

Edward whispered:

“It is the person standing beside you.”

The video ended.

Alexander looked around the room.

Maya.

Daniel.

Noah.

Lily.

Everyone he loved.

Everyone he trusted.

Someone among them knew the final secret.

Someone had been waiting.

May you like

Someone had been lying.

And the war for the Whitmore legacy had only just begun.
