Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Garden

That night, I drove past their rented colonial house. The lights were on in the living room. Through the sheer curtains, I could see Carol sitting on the couch, a glass of wine in her hand, staring blankly at the television.

She looked fragile. Broken. But I felt absolutely no pity. This was the woman who had looked me in the eyes while I was choking on smoke and declared me expendable.

I parked my car down the street, out of sight of the security cameras. I slipped into the shadows of their manicured backyard.

I had bought a small, high-frequency audio transmitter—a device that emits a low, barely audible whisper that sounds like white noise to anyone unless they are in the direct line of the speaker. I planted it in the bushes right outside Carol’s bedroom window.

I connected the transmitter to my phone and played a highly edited, looped audio file I had created. It was the sound of a fire alarm, muffled and distorted, followed by a faint, synthesized whisper: “Mom... why didn't you save me?”

It was psychological warfare.

I sat in my car and watched the second-story window. Within ten minutes, the bedroom light slammed on. Carol pulled back the curtains, her face pale, frantically looking down into the empty, dark garden. She opened the window, shouting into the night.

"Who's there?! Hannah?! Is someone there?!"

David appeared behind her, grabbing her by the waist and pulling her back inside, closing the window forcefully.

I leaned my head back against the headrest of my car and laughed. It was a cold, bitter sound. They thought the fire was the end of the story. They didn't realize that the haunting had just begun.

The next morning, the local news dropped a bombshell. The state insurance commissioner had officially halted the payout for the Miller house fire due to "suspicious discrepancies" in the initial forensic report. An investigation into potential arson-by-negligence was officially underway.

David Miller's assets were temporarily frozen pending the outcome of the investigation.

The first pillar of their perfect life had crumbled. Next came the family dynamic.
