Chapter 6 - The Swiss Trail

While Ethan secured the perimeter of the Bucks County property, Victoria Sterling was working tirelessly in her downtown office, digging into the complex financial web of the Holloway family.

Three weeks before the criminal trial was set to begin, Victoria called an urgent meeting at her office.

I sat in her plush leather armchair while Ethan stood quietly near the door, his eyes scanning the hallway outside.

"We found it," Victoria declared, slamming a thick financial audit report onto her desk. "The Swiss account Eleanor mentioned in her intercepted letter."

"Where was it hidden?" I asked.

"It wasn't under her name, or Marcus’s," Victoria revealed, her eyes sparkling with legal triumph. "It was registered under a shell corporation called Evelyn Holdings—a company created forty years ago by your late father-in-law, Supreme Court Justice Charles Holloway."

Victoria leaned forward, sliding a document across the desk toward me.

"When Charles Holloway died fifteen years ago, he left a secret clause in his master trust," Victoria explained. "The account—which currently holds fourteen million dollars—was meant to be unlocked only when Marcus had a legitimate heir."

I stared at the document in total shock. "An heir..."

"Exactly," Victoria nodded. "Marcus knew about this account all along. That's why he married you, Anna. That's why he was so obsessed with your pregnancy. He didn't just want a child; he needed a child to unlock fourteen million dollars in untaxed offshore wealth."

The terrible, horrifying puzzle pieces of my marriage finally clicked into place.

Marcus hadn't loved me. He had selected me—a quiet, orphaned woman with no powerful family to protect her—as an incubator for his millions. And when I had dared to challenge his control, when I had realized his true nature and tried to leave him during my sixth month of pregnancy, he had locked me in that basement cage to ensure I couldn't escape before the child was born.

"He was going to take Hope the moment she was born," I whispered, a cold chill running through my blood. "And then... he was going to let me die in that cage."

"Yes," Victoria said grimly. "Because if you died of 'complications from childbirth' inside the house, Eleanor could have used her judicial connections to hush up the autopsy, claim sole custody of the baby, and unlock the fourteen million dollars."

Tears of pure, burning rage filled my eyes. The depths of their depravity were unbounded. They had treated my life and my child’s life as nothing more than an inconvenient code to unlock a bank vault.

"Can we freeze the Swiss account?" I demanded, wiping my eyes.

"Better," Victoria smiled predatory-like. "Under federal inheritance law, because the trust was created for the benefit of Justice Holloway's biological heir, and because Marcus has been formally charged with felony abuse against the heir's mother, we filed a motion to terminate Marcus’s power of attorney."

Victoria slid another paper toward me.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Victoria announced, "the Swiss bank recognized Hope Evelyn Vance-Holloway as the sole legal beneficiary of Evelyn Holdings. The fourteen million dollars is now held in an irrevocable trust managed exclusively by you, Anna."

I looked at the paper, then at Victoria.

Marcus and Eleanor had committed unimaginable evil, tortured me, and destroyed their own lives in pursuit of a fortune. And now, every single cent of that fortune belonged to the tiny girl sleeping peacefully in her stroller beside my chair.

"They fought for money," I said quietly, a cold, powerful smile spreading across my face. "And they gave it all to the child they tried to destroy."
