Chapter 5 - The Siege at the West Gate

The heavy rain began to fall in sheets as Caleb hurried into the security center. Marcus was standing in front of the primary monitor wall, surrounded by three tactical team members holding suppressed automatic rifles.
"What do we have?" Caleb demanded.
"A blacked-out suburban blew through the outer security barrier at Gate 4 three minutes ago," Marcus reported, pointing to a thermal camera feed. "They used a signal jammer to disable our primary electric fence. Four armed operatives, heavy tactical gear, non-standard weapons."
"Victor Vale," Caleb murmured, his mind making the connection instantly. "Augustus’s brother. He runs a private military firm out of Miami."
"They aren't here for you, sir," Marcus said grimly, pulling up a tactical layout of the estate. "They’re moving toward the service elevator that leads directly to the third-floor suites. They’re coming for the girl."
A surge of protective fury—hot, raw, and ancient—surged through Caleb’s veins, obliterating the icy calm he usually maintained.
"Lock down Sector 3," Caleb ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Activate the non-lethal defense grids in the West Gallery. I want those men neutralized before they reach the stairs."
"Sir, you need to head to the central safe room—"
"I’m going to the third floor," Caleb interrupted, pulling a sleek, matte-black heavy pistol from a lockbox beneath the console—a weapon he had held an expert marksmanship rating with for ten years. "Marcus, take Team Alpha and flank them from the east corridor. We cut them off in the grand library."
Within seconds, the lights inside Hartwell House flickered and shifted into emergency red illumination. Iron security shutters slammed down over the exterior glass windows with heavy, metallic thuds.
On the second-floor mezzanine, three masked operatives moved swiftly through the shadows, holding suppressed carbines. They were professionals—moving in tight tactical formation, checking corners with deadly efficiency.
They reached the double doors of the grand library—the only remaining access point to the third-floor stairwell.
The lead operative raised his hand, signaling his team to prepare a breach charge.
Before he could plant the device, the heavy oak doors exploded outward.
Caleb stood in the doorway under the crimson emergency lights, his weapon leveled. He fired three rapid, precise shots into the lead operative’s body armor, the heavy impact throwing the man backward against the marble balustrade.
"Flank right!" the second operative yelled, bringing his rifle up.
From the opposite end of the corridor, Marcus and his tactical team unleashed a controlled volley of suppressed fire. Flashbang grenades bounced across the hardwood floor, exploding in blinding flashes of light and deafening thuds.
The mercenaries, caught in a crossfire between Caleb’s fury and Marcus’s military precision, were disarmed and forced to the ground within ninety seconds.
Caleb stepped forward, placing his heavy boot on the chest of the lead operative, who was groaning on the floor, his tactical vest cracked from the blunt force impact of Caleb’s shots.
Caleb knelt down, pulling off the man’s ski mask to reveal a hardened, scar-faced mercenary.
"Who sent you?" Caleb asked, his voice low, quiet, and terrifying.
The mercenary spat blood onto the floor, sneering. "Go to hell, Hartwell."
Caleb didn't flinch. He leaned in closer, his gray eyes locking onto the man’s with an intensity that made the mercenary’s breath hitch.
"You came into my house," Caleb whispered. "You tried to harm a child who saved my life. You have five seconds to give me a name before I transfer you to an unmarked facility in eastern Europe where my security team conducts its private interrogations."
The mercenary swallowed hard, his bravado instantly evaporating under the cold reality of Caleb’s threat.
"Victor..." the man gasped out. "Victor Vale! He paid us half a million! We were supposed to take the kid and the mother to a boat in Michigan!"

Caleb stood up, wiping his hands with a handkerchief. He looked at Marcus.
"Call Callahan," Caleb said flatly. "Tell him we have four extra guests for his custody unit. And tell him to issue an international arrest warrant for Victor Vale."
