Chapter 6 - DISMANTLING THE EMPIRE

The arrest of Jason Vance was only the beginning of the collapse. Within forty-eight hours of his capture at the marina, the dominoes began to fall with devastating speed. The evidence Marcus’s team had uncovered regarding the Cayman Island shell company triggered a massive federal investigation involving the FBI, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, and the Department of Justice.
Sitting in my corner office on the top floor of the Sterling, Rossi & Vance skyscraper, I watched the television screen mounted on the wall. A live news report showed federal agents in dark jackets carrying boxes of confiscated files out of the Oakridge School District administrative building.
"Principal Arthur Pendelton was taken into custody two hours ago," Maya reported, stepping into my office and placing a fresh cup of coffee on my desk. "He’s being charged with federal conspiracy, failure to report child abuse, and accepting kickbacks from Vance’s athletic fund."
"And the school board?" I asked, taking a sip of coffee.
"Three board members have resigned," Maya said with a satisfied smile. "The remaining members have agreed to completely restructure the administration, implement mandatory independent oversight for all athletic staff, and establish a five-million-dollar fund for student safety and trauma counseling."
"Good," I nodded. "What about Vance’s legal representation?"
Maya scoffed. "His public union lawyer withdrew from the case yesterday after the federal grand jury returned a twelve-count indictment against him. He tried to hire three different high-profile criminal defense firms in the city, but as soon as they realized our firm was leading the civil prosecution, none of them wanted to touch the case. He’s stuck with a court-appointed public defender."
I turned my leather chair around to face the city view. The legal trap was completely sprung. Jason Vance was facing charges of felony child abuse, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, witness intimidation, and federal extortion. The evidence against him was so overwhelming that no defense attorney on earth could save him from a decades-long prison sentence.
However, I knew that winning in court was only half the battle. The true victory lay in healing the damage that had been done to my daughter and ensuring that no other family would ever have to go through the horror we experienced.
My phone rang. It was David.
"Hey, sweetheart," I said, my tone softening instantly. "How is Lily doing?"
"She’s sitting on the back patio with the dog, laughing," David said, his voice filled with warmth and relief. "The doctor gave her a clean bill of health this morning. The physical bruises are healing fast, Elena."
"And the emotional ones?" I asked gently.
"She’s strong, just like her mother," David replied. "She asked if you were coming home for dinner tonight. She wants to make homemade pizza."
A wave of profound gratitude washed over me, melting away the stress of the past week. "Tell her I’ll be home by six. And tell her I’m bringing ice cream."
"We love you, Elena," David said softly. "Thank you for fighting for us."

"Always," I whispered, hanging up the phone.
I looked at the framed photograph on my desk—a picture of Lily smiling on her twelfth birthday, holding a golden retriever puppy. I had spent my entire life trying to run away from the ghosts of my past, running away from the fear and weakness I felt in high school. But in standing up to Jason Vance, I had finally realized that the past no longer defined me. The frightened teenage girl was gone, replaced by a protector who would tear down mountains for her family.
