Chapter 4 - The California Counselor

The next morning, I didn't stay in bed. I put on my best professional suit, gathered every piece of financial documentation I owned, and drove to the law offices of Vance & Associates in downtown Monterey. I had done my research overnight; Victoria Vance was a legendary civil litigator who specialized in high-stakes harassment, fraud defense, and asset protection. She was expensive, but I didn't care anymore. I was playing for my life.

Victoria Vance was a striking woman with silver-streaked hair and eyes that looked like they could see through brick walls. She listened to my entire story without interrupting once, her fingers drumming a slow, hypnotic rhythm against her mahogany desk.

When I finished, she smiled. It wasn't a comforting smile; it was the smile of a predator that had just spotted a particularly clumsy target.

"Your mother and sister are amateurs, Joanna," Victoria said, her voice rich and confident. "They are operating on emotion and malice. We are going to operate on pure, cold law. First, the police report in Phoenix. Filing a false police report is a Class 1 misdemeanor in Arizona. Since she crossed state lines by sending that report to California authorities, we can argue interstate harassment."

"What about my job?" I asked, my voice tight. "They've suspended me. If the IT audit takes too long, my reputation is ruined."

"We handle that by forcing their hand," Victoria replied, pulling a fresh legal pad toward her. "We will file an emergency civil lawsuit against Linda and Beth Simpson in California superior court for intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation, and tortious interference with an employment relationship. We will subpoena your sister's personal computer, her phone records, and her bank accounts."

She leaned forward, her eyes locking onto mine. "When your sister realizes that a California process server is going to show up at her fiancé’s house with a federal court order to seize her hard drives, she will panic. People like Beth only feel brave when they are hiding behind their mother's skirt. The moment the spotlight hits them directly, they fracture."

"And my mother?"

"Your mother wants money for a wedding, correct? Well, we are going to file an immediate injunction to freeze any assets she has that are tied to you, and we will request punitive damages that will make the cost of Beth’s wedding look like pocket change. But to do this, Joanna, you need to be strong. They will try to gaslight you. They will get your father to cry on the phone. Do not break."

"I broke the day she put that lighter to my face," I said, looking Victoria dead in the eye. "Now, I just want justice."

"Good," Victoria said, clicking her pen. "Let's start drafting the complaints."
