Chapter 4 - A Very Public Accounting

Janet Carter was having a lovely morning. She was sitting in the kitchen of her suburban Boston home, sipping coffee and looking out the window at the sleek, shiny Ford Mustang parked in the driveway. She felt a sense of relief. The burden of Emily's illness was finally out of her hands. She assumed the hospital had transferred Emily to a state-funded facility, or that she had simply given up.

The peace was shattered when her cell phone began ringing continuously. It wasn't just one call; it was dozens of text messages, notifications, and emails.

Janet opened her Facebook app and gasped.

Chloe Vance had posted a public, public-facing note on the community page that had originally helped raise the money for my treatment. The post contained the receipt of the eighty-two thousand dollar wire transfer, a copy of the forged hospital invoice, and the screenshot of Brandon’s post bragging about his new car.

The caption read: “Janet and Brandon Carter took the money you donated to save Emily’s life and bought a luxury sports car instead. They tried to cancel her surgery while she was on the gurney. Emily survived despite them. Please share this so everyone knows the truth.”

Within three hours, the post had been shared ten thousand times. The comment section was a bloodbath of public outrage. Neighbors, former high school friends, and local business owners who had donated their hard-earned cash were screaming for blood.

"Mom!" Brandon yelled, bursting through the front door, his face pale and sweating. "Mom, look outside! There are people at the end of the driveway!"

Janet rushed to the front window. A local news van from WBZ-TV was pulling up to the curb. A reporter with a microphone was already stepping out, pointing toward the blue Mustang. Behind them, several angry neighbors were standing on the sidewalk, holding signs that read “Justice for Emily” and “Give the Money Back.”

"What do we do?" Brandon panicked, clutching his car keys. "Mom, they're calling me a thief online! My friends are blocking me!"

"Keep the doors locked," Janet whispered, her hands shaking as she pulled the blinds shut. "They can't prove anything. The money was transferred legally into my account. I was her proxy!"

Suddenly, a loud, authoritative knock boomed against the front door, rattling the glass panes. It wasn't the news reporter.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation!" a voice shouted from the porch. "Open the door immediately!"
