Chapter 2 – THE MAN WHO OWNED THE SHADOWS

Chicago knew two kinds of men.
The ones who chased power.
And the ones who already had it.
Luca Moretti belonged to the second kind.
His name was spoken quietly.
Not because people respected him.
Because they feared him.
In the underground world of Chicago, Luca Moretti was not a rumor.
He was a warning.
A man who had inherited an empire built on violence and transformed it into something even more dangerous: control.
He owned shipping companies that moved millions of dollars every month.
He controlled private security firms.
He had connections in places where ordinary people never wanted their names mentioned.
Politicians answered his calls.
Businessmen waited for his approval.
Enemies disappeared before they could become threats.
But the world only knew the surface.
They knew the expensive suits.
The black cars.
The silent men who followed him everywhere.
They did not know the boy who grew up sleeping in a room with a broken window because his father spent more money on gambling than fixing their home.
They did not know the teenager who watched his mother die because someone wanted revenge against the Moretti family.
They did not know the man who learned at twenty years old that kindness was a weakness people used against you.
Luca had built walls around himself so high that nobody could climb them.
Nobody.
Until Ava Bennett.
The private hospital room was silent.
Too silent.
Luca hated hospitals.
They reminded him of helplessness.
Of things he could not control.
Of the one thing money could never guarantee.
Life.
A doctor entered with a tablet.
“Mr. Moretti, you were lucky.”
Luca looked at him without emotion.
“Luck is usually just someone else’s mistake.”
The doctor paused.
It was always the same reaction.
People became uncomfortable around Luca.
They felt the danger before they understood it.
“You suffered two broken ribs, a concussion, and several deep cuts. You should remain here for observation.”
“No.”
The doctor sighed.
“I expected that answer.”
Luca sat up slowly.
Pain shot through his side.
He ignored it.
Pain was familiar.
Pain was something he understood.
The doctor looked at him seriously.
“Someone saved your life.”
Luca’s expression changed slightly.
The doctor noticed.
“The nurse who found you. She kept you stable until emergency services arrived.”
Luca looked toward the window.
Rain still covered the city.
“She stayed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The doctor smiled faintly.
“Because she’s a nurse.”
That answer stayed with him.
Because Luca knew something the doctor didn’t.
People always had reasons.
Everyone wanted something.
Money.
Protection.
Power.
A favor.
A connection.
Nobody risked their own safety for a stranger.
Nobody.
Except Ava Bennett.
Across town, Ava returned to Mercy General the next morning.
She had barely slept.
But she was a professional.
She walked through the hospital doors carrying the same nurse’s bag she had carried for years.
The same halls.
The same patients.
The same people.
Yet everything felt different.
Her coworkers noticed.
“You look exhausted.”
Ava smiled weakly.
“Long night.”
Her friend, Rachel, looked at her carefully.
Rachel had known Ava since nursing school.
She knew when Ava was pretending.
“You cried.”
Ava looked away.
“Rachel…”
“What happened?”
For a moment, Ava wanted to say everything.
She wanted to tell someone how humiliating it felt.
How three years of love had disappeared in one sentence.
How the man she planned to marry had looked at her like she was a mistake.
But she couldn’t.
Not yet.
“I found out Ethan wasn’t who I thought he was.”
Rachel’s face hardened.
“What did he do?”
Ava swallowed.
“He never loved me.”
The anger in Rachel’s eyes appeared instantly.
“Oh, Ava…”
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”
Ava looked down.
She hated that.
She hated people seeing her pain.
Because she spent her whole life being the person who helped others.
Not the person who needed help.
“I just need time.”
Rachel hugged her.
“You don’t have to be strong every second.”
Ava closed her eyes.
For a few seconds…
She let herself break.
Meanwhile, three floors above the city, Luca Moretti was learning everything about the woman who saved him.
His right-hand man, Matteo Russo, placed a folder on the desk.
“She’s twenty-nine years old.”
Luca opened it.
“Ava Elizabeth Bennett.”
A photograph was attached.
Ava smiling outside the hospital.
No makeup.
No expensive clothes.
Just a simple smile.
A smile that looked impossible in Luca’s world.
“Born in Chicago. Graduated top of her nursing program. Works at Mercy General.”
Matteo continued.
“No criminal record. No financial problems. No connections to rival families.”
Luca flipped through the pages.
“Family?”
“Her father died when she was sixteen. Mother passed away three years ago.”
Luca stopped.
Three years ago.
The same year she met Ethan.
“She has almost no one.”
Matteo hesitated.
“Except Ethan Carter.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“Who is he?”
“A corporate attorney.”
“Relationship?”
“Three years.”
Matteo paused.
“But something happened last night.”
Luca looked up.
“What?”
“We checked restaurant security footage.”
Matteo placed a tablet on the desk.
The video played.
Ava entering Marcell’s.
Then stopping.
Listening.
Her face changing.
Luca watched silently.
He saw the exact moment her heart broke.
The way her shoulders dropped.
The way she tried to remain composed.
The way she walked away without causing a scene.
Something tightened inside him.
“She heard him.”
“Yes.”
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
Luca watched Ava leave into the rain.
Alone.
Carrying a gift.
A gift for a man who had humiliated her.
“Find Ethan Carter.”
Matteo looked surprised.
“Boss?”
“Find out why he hurt her.”
Luca’s voice became colder.
“And if he was responsible for putting her in danger?”
Matteo understood.
There were many things Luca Moretti forgave.
Betrayal was not one of them.
That evening, Ava was leaving the hospital when she saw the black car waiting outside.
She immediately stopped.
The vehicle was expensive.
Perfectly clean.
The kind of car that announced importance.
The back door opened.
A man stepped out.
Not Luca.
Someone else.
Tall.
Serious.
Wearing a dark suit.
“Miss Bennett?”
Ava became cautious.
“Yes?”
“My employer would like to speak with you.”
She frowned.
“Who is your employer?”
The man hesitated.
Then said the name.
“Luca Moretti.”
Ava stared.
The name from the accident.
The mysterious man everyone seemed afraid of.
“Why?”
“He wants to thank you.”
Ava shook her head.
“I don’t need anything.”
The man seemed almost surprised.
“Everyone needs something.”
“Maybe.”
Ava adjusted her bag.
“But I didn’t save him because I wanted something.”
She turned to leave.
Then stopped.
“Is he okay?”
The man nodded.
“He is.”
A small sense of relief crossed her face.
“Good.”
She walked away.
The man watched her disappear.
Then called Luca.
“She refused.”
A pause.
“What did she say?”
The man smiled slightly.
“She only asked if you were alive.”
Silence.
Then Luca spoke.
“Bring her the flowers.”
“Flowers?”
“White roses.”
The man understood.
Luca Moretti did not send gifts.
He did not apologize.
He did not show gratitude.
But for Ava Bennett…
He was willing to try.
The next morning, Ava arrived at work and found something waiting at the nurse’s station.
A massive bouquet of white roses.
Attached was a small card.
She opened it.
Only one sentence was written.
Thank you for giving me another chance at life. – Luca Moretti
Her coworkers immediately gathered.
“Who sent those?”
Ava stared at the card.
She didn’t know why…
But the name felt different now.
Not frightening.
Not dangerous.
Just complicated.
That night, she dreamed about the man from the rain.
Not the blood.
Not the accident.
His eyes.
The eyes of someone who had spent his entire life alone.
Three days later, Ava’s life changed again.
Because Ethan Carter came to her apartment.
And he was not alone.
Ava opened the door and froze.
Ethan stood there.
Behind him was a woman wearing a designer coat.
A woman Ava recognized.
Victoria Hale.
The daughter of one of Chicago’s wealthiest families.
The woman Ethan’s law firm had been trying to impress for months.
Ava looked between them.
“Why are you here?”
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
“Ava, we need to talk.”
She almost laughed.
Those words again.
“We already talked.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“Ava, this isn’t personal.”
Ava stared at her.
“That’s usually what people say before doing something very personal.”
Victoria’s expression tightened.
Ethan sighed.
“Things have changed.”
Ava smiled sadly.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“Things didn’t change.”
Her voice became stronger.
“I finally saw them clearly.”
Ethan looked away.
And that told her everything.
But she had no idea that Ethan’s visit had nothing to do with guilt.
It had everything to do with fear.
Because Ethan Carter had discovered something.
The woman he abandoned…
Was now connected to the most dangerous man in Chicago.
And Luca Moretti never protected anything halfway.
That night, Luca stood in his penthouse overlooking the city.
Matteo entered.
“We found something.”
Luca turned.
“About Ethan?”
“Yes.”
Matteo placed a file down.
“Ethan Carter wasn’t planning to leave Ava because he stopped loving her.”
Luca opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Financial records.
Photographs.
His expression darkened.
“Then why?”
Matteo answered quietly.
“Because someone paid him.”
The room went silent.
Luca looked at Ava’s photograph on the desk.
The woman who saved him.
The woman who walked into the rain alone.
The woman who had no idea she had become part of a war.
“Who paid him?”
Matteo hesitated.
Then said:
“The Hale family.”
Luca’s eyes turned cold.
The Hale family.
One of Chicago’s most powerful political dynasties.
A family that had been trying to destroy the Moretti empire for years.
And now…
They had used Ava.
A woman who had nothing to do with their war.
Luca closed the folder.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Protect her.”
Matteo nodded.
“And Ethan?”
Luca looked back at the city.
The storm outside reflected the storm inside him.
“Not yet.”
A pause.
“First, I want to know how much he was willing to sacrifice the woman who loved him.”
Because Luca Moretti had spent his entire life fighting enemies who came with weapons.
But this enemy came with a smile.
May you like
And Luca was about to enter a war where the most dangerous battlefield…
Was Ava Bennett’s heart.
