CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE BACKPACK

The first bullet shattered the diner window.

Glass exploded across the room.

Maya screamed.

Jackson reacted instantly.

"DOWN!"

The little girl hit the floor as Tank threw himself over her.

Three more shots followed.

The windows erupted.

Coffee mugs shattered.

Neon lights burst.

The peaceful diner transformed into a battlefield.

Outside, rain poured from the black sky.

Inside, chaos erupted.

But the Iron Vultures were not ordinary men.

Many had military backgrounds.

Some had survived wars.

Others had survived prison.

All of them understood one thing:

Protect your own.

And at that moment, Maya became one of theirs.

Jackson dropped behind an overturned table.

A bullet ripped through the wall inches from his head.

"Damn it."

Tank checked the frightened girl.

"You okay?"

Maya nodded through tears.

The backpack remained locked against her chest.

She still refused to let go.

That caught Jackson's attention.

Even during a gunfight.

Even terrified.

The child wouldn't release that bag.

Whatever was inside mattered.

A lot.

Outside, Victor Kane's men spread into tactical positions.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Dangerous.

This wasn't a kidnapping crew.

This was an extraction team.

Which meant the backpack contained something worth millions.

Or something worth killing for.

Jackson grabbed his radio.

"Back exit secure?"

A voice crackled.

"Secure."

"Roof?"

"Covered."

"Perimeter?"

"Three men east side. Two west."

Jackson nodded.

Good.

Very good.

Kane thought he had trapped them.

In reality, he'd just stepped into Iron Vulture territory.

A smile touched Jackson's lips.

Big mistake.

Outside, a loudspeaker crackled.

Then Kane's voice filled the storm.

"Last chance."

Nobody answered.

"Hand over the girl."

Still nothing.

Rain hammered the pavement.

The silence became its own answer.

Kane sighed.

Then all hell broke loose.

Automatic gunfire erupted from both sides.

The diner shook.

Tables splintered.

Walls cracked.

The battle had begun.

Maya buried her face against Tank's jacket.

The noise terrified her.

Every gunshot made her jump.

Every explosion made her cry harder.

Tank gently squeezed her shoulder.

"Hey."

She looked up.

The giant biker smiled.

"We got you."

Those three words nearly broke her.

Because nobody had said that in a very long time.

Not since her father disappeared.

Not since her uncle died.

Not since the men with black SUVs began hunting her.

"We got you."

For the first time in days...

She believed it.

Jackson fired twice through a shattered window.

One of Kane's men dropped behind cover.

The president of the Iron Vultures wasn't reckless.

He wasn't emotional.

But tonight was different.

Because Daniel Mercer was involved.

And Daniel wasn't just a friend.

He was family.

Ten years ago, they'd built this club together.

Ten years ago, they'd fought together.

Ten years ago, Daniel died.

Or so Jackson thought.

Now everything he believed had been turned upside down.

A movement outside caught his attention.

Kane.

The mercenary was advancing.

Calm.

Focused.

Fearless.

Like a man who expected to win.

Jackson hated people like that.

Especially because they were usually dangerous.

A flash grenade sailed through the broken window.

"DOWN!"

The diner erupted in white light.

The explosion deafened everyone.

For two seconds, nobody could see.

Nobody could hear.

Then the front door exploded inward.

Kane's men stormed inside.

The fight became personal.

Fists.

Knives.

Gunfire.

Pure chaos.

One attacker rushed toward the counter.

Toward Maya.

Toward the backpack.

Tank intercepted him like a freight train.

The impact launched both men into a booth.

Wood shattered.

The attacker reached for a pistol.

Tank punched him once.

The man stopped moving.

Maya stared in shock.

Tank grinned.

"Stay behind me, kid."

Across the diner, Jackson found himself face-to-face with Victor Kane.

At last.

The two men circled each other.

Years of violence reflected in their eyes.

Years of experience.

Neither underestimated the other.

Kane smiled.

"You've gotten old."

Jackson laughed.

"So have you."

Kane's gaze shifted toward Maya.

"You don't understand what you're protecting."

"Then explain it."

"I can't."

"Convenient."

Kane shrugged.

"It isn't for me."

Jackson frowned.

That answer mattered.

Because Kane wasn't acting like a mastermind.

He was acting like an employee.

Someone higher up was giving orders.

Someone powerful.

Someone rich.

Someone terrified of whatever was in that backpack.

Kane lunged.

The fight exploded.

A brutal punch caught Jackson's jaw.

Jackson answered with an elbow.

Kane staggered.

Then recovered instantly.

Both men crashed through a table.

Wood splintered everywhere.

The diner looked more like a war zone with every passing second.

Ten minutes later, it was over.

Kane's surviving men retreated.

The black SUVs disappeared into the storm.

The diner stood damaged but standing.

The Iron Vultures remained alive.

Most importantly—

Maya remained safe.

For now.

Jackson stood in the wreckage breathing heavily.

Blood dripped from a cut above his eye.

Tank approached.

"What's next?"

Jackson looked at Maya.

The child sat quietly in a booth.

Exhausted.

Shaking.

Holding that backpack.

Still.

Always that backpack.

Jackson walked over.

The room became silent.

He sat across from her.

"Maya."

The girl looked up.

"We need to see what's inside."

Fear crossed her face.

"Daddy said not to open it."

Jackson nodded.

"I know."

"He said only if everything goes wrong."

Jackson leaned forward.

"Maya."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I think everything already went wrong."

The child looked down.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then slowly...

She unzipped the backpack.

Every biker in the room watched.

The tension became unbearable.

Maya reached inside.

And removed a metal box.

Small.

Black.

Locked.

Jackson frowned.

"That's it?"

The girl shook her head.

"No."

She opened a hidden compartment.

Then removed a second item.

A photograph.

Old.

Faded.

Jackson took it.

His breath caught.

Daniel.

The photo showed Daniel standing beside three other men.

All smiling.

All younger.

All alive.

Jackson immediately recognized one of them.

And the recognition sent ice through his veins.

"No..."

Tank looked over his shoulder.

Then cursed.

The second man in the picture wasn't a criminal.

Wasn't a biker.

Wasn't a mercenary.

He was a United States Senator.

One of the most powerful politicians in the country.

The third man was even worse.

A billionaire technology executive.

The fourth was a famous judge.

Four men.

One photograph.

One impossible secret.

Maya watched their reactions.

"Daddy said you'd recognize them."

Jackson nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

His stomach turned.

Because he absolutely did.

And if those men were connected...

This was bigger than anyone imagined.

Much bigger.

"What else?"

Maya handed him a flash drive.

Tiny.

Ordinary.

Potentially devastating.

Jackson stared at it.

Kane had attacked with a small army.

Men had died.

People were hunting a seven-year-old child.

All because of a little flash drive.

Whatever was stored inside...

Could destroy empires.

One hour later, they arrived at a safe house.

An old warehouse owned by the club.

The storm continued outside.

Thunder rattled the windows.

Inside, a laptop sat on a steel table.

The flash drive was plugged in.

Everyone gathered around.

Jackson clicked the first file.

A video appeared.

The screen flickered.

Then a familiar face emerged.

Daniel Mercer.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But unquestionably alive.

Maya immediately burst into tears.

"Daddy."

The room froze.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

He paused.

"...then they found Maya."

Jackson's chest tightened.

Daniel continued.

"Brother, if you're there, I need you to listen carefully."

Jackson felt twenty years of memories crash into him.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I owe you an explanation."

The video timestamp showed it had been recorded only eight days earlier.

Eight days.

Not ten years.

Eight days.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Ten years ago, I didn't die."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

"Someone tried to kill me."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Someone powerful."

The next words changed everything.

"It was one of the men in the photograph."

Every biker exchanged stunned looks.

Daniel continued.

"I discovered evidence connecting government officials, corporate executives, and international arms dealers."

Jackson's face hardened.

He knew where this was going.

Corruption.

Money.

Power.

Always the same poison.

Daniel pointed toward the screen.

"The evidence is encrypted inside this drive."

Tank frowned.

"Encrypted?"

Daniel nodded.

"If I'm dead, release everything."

The room became still.

"If I'm alive..."

Daniel hesitated.

"...then come find me."

Jackson's heartbeat accelerated.

The screen suddenly changed.

A map appeared.

Coordinates.

A location.

Deep in the mountains.

Remote.

Isolated.

Hidden.

Then Daniel spoke one final sentence.

The sentence that would launch a rescue mission.

The sentence that would start a war.

"They have me."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Maya's small voice finally broke the silence.

"They took my daddy."

Jackson looked at the little girl.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

The child had crossed half the country alone.

She had survived assassins.

She had protected the backpack.

She had followed her father's instructions.

And now she looked at him with complete trust.

Trust he wasn't sure he deserved.

But he knew one thing.

Absolutely one thing.

Nobody was taking this child.

Nobody was hurting her father.

Nobody was ending this story that way.

Jackson stood.

The room immediately focused on him.

The Iron Vultures waited.

Their president looked around the warehouse.

At his brothers.

At Maya.

At the coordinates glowing on the screen.

Then he made his decision.

A dangerous one.

A reckless one.

The only one he could live with.

"We ride at dawn."

A grin spread across Tank's face.

Others followed.

Engines would roar.

Weapons would be loaded.

Old debts would be paid.

And somewhere in the mountains...

A man everyone believed dead was waiting.

Daniel Mercer was alive.

But for how much longer?

Because at that very moment, in a heavily guarded compound hidden among the cliffs, Daniel sat chained to a steel chair.

Blood covered his face.

A powerful man stepped from the shadows.

The same powerful man from the photograph.

The senator.

May you like

And his first words made Daniel's blood run cold.

"Your daughter should be dead by now."
