Chapter 9 - The Recovery

Four hours and twenty minutes later, the green light above the surgical suite doors clicked on.
Dr. Marcus Vance walked out into the lounge, pulling off his surgical cap. His face was tired, but his eyes were bright with professional triumph.
Mave sat up straight in her wheelchair, her heart hammering in her throat. Rafe stood up instantly beside her, his hand resting reassuringly on the back of her chair.
"Doctor?" Mave choked out.
Dr. Vance smiled broadly. "The valve seated perfectly, Mrs. Donovan. The blood flow normalization was immediate. His heart rate dropped to a pristine 72 beats per minute within three minutes of bypass disconnection. It was a complete, unqualified success."
Mave let out a loud, breathless gasp, burying her face in her hands as deep, uncontrollable sobs of pure relief shook her chest.
Eight months of terror, endless nights of crying in her small kitchen, terrifying hospital bills, and the constant fear that her son’s heart would stop beating in his sleep—all of it vanished in a single, glorious second.
Rafe didn't hesitate. He dropped to one knee beside her wheelchair, wrapping his strong arm gently around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest, letting her weep tears of joy against his dark wool blazer.
"He’s okay, Mave," Rafe whispered into her dark hair, his own voice thick with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in decades. "Your boy is going to live."
"Thank you... oh God, thank you..." Mave sobbed, her hand clutching Rafe’s lapel tightly.
Mia walked into the lounge carrying a massive basket of fresh yellow lilies, her face glowing with tears and smiles as she ran over to hug Mave from the other side.
Two hours later, Finn was transferred to the private recovery suite.
He was awake, breathing easily without oxygen tubes, his cheeks already showing a soft, healthy pink color that Mave hadn't seen in three years. His tiny hand was held firmly in his mother's, while his other hand held his trusty teddy bear.
Rafe stood near the window, watching the scene silently. His phone chimed in his pocket. He pulled it out and read a text from Julian:
PROPERTY TRANSFERS COMPLETE. THE SALT LINE DEED HAS BEEN REGISTERED UNDER MAVE DONOVAN’S NAME. CARLO ROSSI HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY EXILED TO SICILY. WATERFRONT IS SECURE.
Rafe tucked the phone away, a sense of profound, quiet peace settling over his chest.
Finn looked over at Rafe from his bed, beckoning him with a small finger. "Hey... Rafe."
Rafe walked over to the bedside, stepping quietly. "Yes, champ?"
"The doctor said my new heart is strong like a horse," Finn boasted, a tired grin on his small face. "He said I can play soccer next summer."
"He’s right," Rafe smiled, leaning down. "And when you're ready, I'm going to buy you the best pair of soccer cleats in Boston."
Finn looked at his mother, then back at Rafe. "Are you going to stay with us now? Like a team?"
Mave’s cheeks turned a delicate shade of pink, her eyes darting nervously to Rafe.

Rafe looked down at Mave, his winter-grey eyes filled with an undeniable, fierce tenderness that no mob war or financial empire could ever replace.
"If your mom lets me," Rafe said softly, "I’m not going anywhere."
