Chapter 4 - The Reunion in the Shadows

The heavy oak door of the second-floor study was locked from the outside.
I didn't look for a key. I threw my entire weight against the latch, the wood splintering under the force until the door burst open, crashing against the inner wall.
Inside, sitting on a leather armchair near a cold stone fireplace, was Julia.
Her hands were tied loosely with a soft silk cord behind her back, her hair was unstyled, and her dark blue wool dress was creased from travel, but she was alive. Her sharp, beautiful dark eyes widened in shock as I burst into the room, tears instantly welling up along her lashes.
"Nathan..." she gasped, her voice cracking with pure exhaustion.
I dropped to my knees in front of her chair, my hands shaking violently as I pulled a pocketknife from my jacket and sliced through the silk cords binding her wrists.
"Julia," I whispered, holding her face in my hands, my thumbs wiping away the hot tears spilling down her pale cheeks. "Julia, I'm so sorry... I'm so, so sorry..."
The moment her hands were free, she threw her arms around my neck, burying her face into the crook of my shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably. The smell of her—rainwater, lavender, and the familiar warmth I had missed every single day for five years—filled my senses, breaking through the ice that had encased my heart for half a decade.
"The boys..." she sobbed into my coat. "Nathan, Owen and Caleb... where are they? Did they reach you? Are they safe?"
"They are safe, Julia," I said, pulling back slightly so I could look into her eyes, my voice filled with an absolute, fierce certainty. "They are at a safe-house in Tribeca with a medical team and the best security team in the state. Owen brought me your key. He brought Caleb right to my lobby."
Julia let out a long, shuddering breath, her forehead resting against mine as her shoulders shook with relief. "I was so scared... when those men came to the apartment, I managed to lock the boys in the bedroom pantry and gave Owen the paper with your office address. I told him not to stop running until he saw the silver building..."
"He did it, Julia," I said softly, kissing her temple. "He was so brave. He held Caleb's hand the whole way. He protected him, just like you taught him to."
She pulled back, looking at my face, her fingers tracing the sharp line of my jaw, taking in the grey hairs at my temples and the dark circles beneath my eyes.
"You came," she whispered, her voice filled with a mixture of wonder and old pain. "Five years ago... when your father came to Portland... he showed me photos of you at boardroom meetings. He told me you had agreed to let us go to save your inheritance. He told me I was just a temporary distraction."
A wave of bitter shame washed over me, but I didn't look away. "My father was a monster who built a cage around all of us, Julia. He forged documents, he blackmailed your family's medical accounts, and he lied to me every day. I didn't know about the boys. If I had known... I would have burned this entire city to the ground to reach you."
She looked deep into my eyes, searching for the man she had loved five years ago beneath the polished suit and the corporate title. And as she looked, the tension in her frame finally dissolved, replaced by a profound, heavy quiet.
"It's over, isn't it?" she asked softly.
"It's over," I promised her. "Arthur and Marcus are in federal custody. Whitmore Global is going to be audited from top to bottom. The empire he built on secrets is done."
Walter Briggs stepped into the doorway of the study, holding a tactical radio, his face softening slightly as he saw us together.
"Nathan," Walter said gently. "The federal transport unit is loaded. Agent Vance has cleared the estate. The helicopter is prepped to take us back to Manhattan."

I stood up, holding my hand out to Julia. She took it without hesitation, her fingers lacing tightly through mine, refusing to let go.
"Let's go home," I said.
