Chapter 7 - The Audit

On Monday morning, nine days post-surgery, I attended my first formal court hearing via secure video conference from my living room, surrounded by Eleanor, Marcus, and Rosalind.
In the opposing digital frame sat Lorraine, Sable, and Corbin, flanked by a overworked court-appointed public defender who looked like he wished he was anywhere else on earth.
Judge Harold Vance—no relation to Eleanor, but equally formidable—presided over the hearing.
"We are here to consider the emergency petition for asset preservation and criminal referral filed by Marlo Ashgrove," Judge Vance announced, reviewing the massive stack of forensic evidence compiled by Eleanor.
The public defender stood up. "Your Honor, my clients contend that the monetary transfers were authorized marital asset redistributions intended for family emergency management during Mrs. Ashgrove's life-threatening surgery."
"Family emergency management?" Eleanor Vance interjected, standing tall. "Your Honor, we have submitted certified bank records showing that within four hours of Mrs. Ashgrove being placed on cardiopulmonary bypass, $85,000 was transferred directly into Sable Voss’s personal checking account to cover luxury retail purchases and private spa lease defaults."
Eleanor clicked a button, projecting a document onto the shared court screen.
"Furthermore, we have obtained the forensic digital audit of Mrs. Ashgrove's corporate server," Eleanor continued. "The IP address used to execute the unauthorized wire transfers at 8:14 AM on Monday morning was located at The Glass Railing Bistro—where Mrs. Lorraine Voss was currently hosting a catered champagne brunch."
Judge Vance’s eyebrows rose. He looked over his glasses at Lorraine. "Is this true, Mrs. Voss?"
Lorraine stammered, clutching her pearl necklace. "Your... Your Honor, it was a family gathering!"
"A gathering to celebrate the theft of a dying woman’s life savings," Judge Vance said, his tone turning icy cold.
He flipped through the remaining documents, his face hardening with every page.
"The evidence presented here shows a clear, calculated pattern of grand larceny, bank fraud, wire fraud, and elder-adjacent financial exploitation," Judge Vance declared firmly.
He slammed his gavel down onto his desk.
"Court orders are as follows," Judge Vance announced:
"First: All asset freezes on the respondents' accounts are converted into permanent legal attachments." "Second: The respondent, Corbin Ashgrove, is ordered to immediately surrender all keys, access codes, and legal claims to the Ashgrove Estate and Ashgrove Design Studio." "Third: This court formally issues a referral to the State District Attorney’s Financial Crimes Division for immediate criminal indictment of Lorraine Voss, Sable Voss, and Corbin Ashgrove."
Corbin buried his face in his hands, breaking into audible sobs.
Lorraine stood up, shouting at the screen. "You can't do this! We are respectable citizens!"
"Mute the respondent," Judge Vance commanded the court clerk coldly. "This hearing is adjourned."
The screen went dark.
In my living room, Marcus let out a loud, triumphant shout, clapping his hands together. Rosalind squeezed my shoulders gently, a wide, proud smile on her face.

I leaned back against my pillows, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of my repaired heart against my ribs.
Stronger. Steadier. Unbroken.
