Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Arthur Vance

By midnight, the wedding of the year had become the scandal of the decade.

The story had already broken online: Hillionaire Groom Dumps Bride at the Altar After Eight-Year-Old Girl Accuses Her of Framing an Innocent Woman. Social media was flooded with leaked photos of Clara standing outside the precinct in her ruined wedding gown, clutching her veil around her face while flashbulbs popped from every angle.

Julian sat in his high-rise downtown office overlooking the glittering lights of Seattle, a glass of bourbon untouched on the mahogany desk in front of him.

The heavy oak door opened without a knock, and Arthur Vance stormed into the room, his face purple with rage, his expensive overcoat flapping behind him.

“Are you out of your absolute mind, Julian?!” Arthur roared, slamming his briefcase down onto the desk. “You humiliated my daughter! You brought the entire Vance family name through the mud over some hysterical maid and her brat of a kid! Do you have any idea what this does to our stock prices? Do you know what the board is saying?!”

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't even look up from the document he was reviewing—a full forensic audit of Clara’s credit card statements from the past six months, which he had pulled up through his private investigators less than an hour ago.

“Sit down, Arthur,” Julian said quietly.

“I will not sit down!” Arthur shouted, pacing across the plush rug. “You will issue a public statement tomorrow morning retracting everything! You will say it was a misunderstanding, a wedding-day panic attack, and you two are going to take a private jet to the Bahamas to patch things up—!”

Julian slid a single piece of paper across the desk.

Arthur stopped pacing. He stared down at the paper, his chest heaving. Slowly, reluctantly, he leaned over the desk and read the first two lines.

It was a bank transfer receipt dated three weeks ago—from an offshore account registered in Clara’s name, transferring fifty thousand dollars to a private investigator known for fabricating fake evidence and planting false criminal charges against former employees.

And right beneath it was a signed confession from the private investigator, who had already been picked up by federal marshals two hours earlier after realizing Clara was about to throw him entirely under the bus.

Arthur’s face drained of color. The blustering rage vanished, replaced by the hollow panic of a man who realized his empire was built on rotten wood.

“She... she made a mistake,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. “Young people do foolish things when they’re stressed about a wedding—”

“She didn't make a mistake, Arthur,” Julian said, finally looking up, his eyes cold as winter ice. “She committed a felony. She stole an heirloom from an honest woman, planted it in a public locker, and used her family’s influence to throw an innocent single mother into a holding cell just so she could keep wearing a necklace that didn't belong to her.”

Julian stood up, towering over his former future father-in-law.

“The wedding is canceled. Permanently. And as for our corporate partnership—the logistics contract between Thorne Enterprises and Vance Properties is officially terminated as of midnight tonight. My legal team is already auditing every joint venture we have. If I find a single penny of illegal activity anywhere else in your books, I will personally hand the files to the federal prosecutor before breakfast.”

Arthur staggered backward, gripping the edge of a leather armchair for support. He looked like an old man, suddenly stripped of all his armor.

“Julian... please,” Arthur muttered, his voice trembling. “Think of the family. Think of what this does to Clara—”

“Clara made her choices,” Julian said flatly, turning his back to look out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city lights. “Now she gets to live with them. Get out of my office, Arthur.”
