Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at Dawn

Instead of going back to my house, I drove straight to a 24-hour diner twenty minutes away.

I ordered Nate a hot hot chocolate and a plate of chocolate chip pancakes. I sat in the vinyl booth across from him, watching him eat, wrapping my hands around a mug of black coffee to stop them from shaking.

"Did Dean touch you tonight, Nate?" I asked softly, reaching across the table to hold his small hand.

Nate swallowed a bite of pancake, looking down at his plate. "He made me give him my Nintendo Switch. He said if I didn't give it to him, Aunt Kim wouldn't let me have any dinner."

My grip on my coffee mug tightened until my knuckles turned white. "Did she give you dinner?"

"Just a bag of chips," Nate whispered. "Because I wouldn't say sorry to Dean for not inviting him to my party."

I took a deep breath, forcing my voice to stay soothing and calm for my boy. "You did nothing wrong, Nate. Do you hear me? Absolutely nothing. Aunt Kim and Uncle Harry are the ones who did something very, very bad. But Mommy is fixing it now."

"Is Dad mad at us?" Nate asked, his dark eyes brimming with worry.

"Dad made his choice," I said quietly. "And now I’m making mine."

At 6:00 AM, the sun began to rise over the horizon, casting a pale golden light over the city. I drove Nate back to our house.

Harry’s car was parked in the driveway.

I walked into the house with Nate, keeping him close to my side. The living room lights were on. Harry was sitting on the couch, holding a mug of cold coffee, looking disheveled and frantic.

When he heard the front door open, he jumped up, his face relief mixed with immediate anger.

"Where the hell have you been?!" Harry shouted, striding toward the entryway. "Kim called me at four in the morning screaming that you broke her door down and assaulted her! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?! She’s threatening to press criminal charges!"

I didn't answer him right away. I turned to Nate and said gently, "Go upstairs to your room, buddy. Pack your favorite toys and your clothes into your backpack. We’re going to stay at a hotel for a little while."

Nate nodded quickly and sprinted up the stairs, glad to escape the storm.

Once the sound of Nate’s bedroom door closing echoed from above, I turned my full attention to my husband.

"She deprived our son of food because he wouldn't apologize to her bully son," I said, my voice eerily calm, devoid of all emotion. "She took his watch. She lied to him and told him I didn't want to talk to him because I was at a party."

Harry flinched slightly, but his stubborn defense of his sister quickly reasserted itself. "She was trying to teach him a lesson about family unity, Claire! You escalated this into a felony! Breaking and entering?!"

"I retrieved my son from a woman who emotionally abused him," I said, walking past him into the kitchen.

I opened the bottom drawer of the desk, pulled out a thick yellow accordion folder, and set it on the island. Inside were six months of documented evidence: printouts of Kim’s harassing texts, Nate’s school nurse reports regarding bruises from Dean, bank statements showing how much money Harry had secretly transferred to Kim over the last year, and call logs.

Harry stared at the folder, his brow furrowing. "What is that?"

"That is my divorce file," I said.

Harry let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "Divorce? Are you serious? You’re divorcing me over a family squabble?!"

"No, Harry," I said, looking him dead in the eyes. "I’m divorcing you because you are a coward. You let your sister torment your own child because you were too weak to stand up to her. You chose her comfort over Nate’s safety. You failed as a husband, and worse, you failed as a father."

Harry’s face drained of color. The arrogance in his posture melted away, replaced by a sudden, sickening realization that I wasn't bluffing.

"Claire... wait," he stammered, stepping forward, reaching for my hand. "Come on... we’re stressed. We can go to counseling. I’ll talk to Kim. I’ll tell her to back off—"

"It’s too late," I said, pulling my hand back before he could touch me. "You had a hundred chances to talk to Kim. You chose her every single time. Now you can go live with her."

Nate came down the stairs carrying his stuffed dog and his backpack.

I picked up my purse, grabbed the accordion folder, and took Nate’s hand.

"Where are you going?" Harry panicked, following us to the front door. "Claire, please! You can't just take my son!"

I stopped at the threshold, looking back at the man I had spent ten years of my life with.

"I’m taking my son to a lawyer's office," I said softly. "You’ll be served with emergency custody papers by noon."

I walked out the door, leaving Harry standing alone in the empty hallway of the house we used to call a home.
