Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Within

Clara stared down at the legal documents resting on the weathered wood of the porch railing.

“Buy us out?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “What are you talking about?”

Marcus smiled, stepping closer to the porch. “Mr. Andrews is a pragmatist. When he visited your little... hovel the other day, he realized that maintaining sentimental ties to an impoverished rust-belt neighborhood is bad for his public image. Furthermore, our corporate legal team discovered that this entire block is zoned for commercial redevelopment as part of our upcoming logistics hub expansion.”

Inside the house, Emma gasped, her eyes filling with tears. “You’re taking our house?”

“We’re clearing the property,” Marcus corrected her coldly. “Naturally, Mr. Andrews authorized a generous relocation bonus—ten thousand dollars cash, provided you vacate the premises by the end of the week. Sign the quitclaim deed, take the money, and disappear. It’s what your little recycling hustle was trying to earn anyway, isn't it?”

Clara’s knees buckled. She caught herself against the doorframe, her vision swimming as a wave of dizziness washed over her.

“Sam... Sam wouldn't do this,” she choked out, her breath catching in her throat. “He promised... he looked me in the eye...”

“Mr. Andrews makes promises to shareholders, Mrs. Wilson, not to childhood ghosts,” Marcus sneered, tapping the papers. “Sign the deed.”

Before Clara could reach for the pen, a heavy shadow fell across the porch.

A large black car identical to the one Marcus had arrived in swung around the corner at breakneck speed, slamming its brakes right beside the curb. The rear door flew open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop.

Samuel Andrews stepped out, his suit jacket flying open, his face twisted in a mask of absolute fury.

“Marcus!” Samuel roared, his voice echoing down the quiet residential street so violently that several neighborhood dogs began barking in unison.

Marcus froze, his diplomatic smile shattering instantly. “Boss... I thought you were tied up in Boston with the Meridian delegation—”

Samuel didn't let him finish. He crossed the lawn in three massive strides, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his designer suit and slamming him hard against the side of the car with a deafening thud.
